Tough times for teens with knives | The Daily Telegraph
NSW will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to knife crime, with first offenders facing two years in jail just for having a knife.
Faced with the trend of teenagers using knives like "fashion accessories", refusing to be searched for knives will attract a $5500 fine.
Under the Bill to be adopted by State Parliament today, the measures will create a jail sentence for first offenders where previously they would have been let off with a fine.
The new search and seizure provisions will also apply to people possessing any type of knife in a public place, including kitchen knives.
Authorities are concerned that, with combat style knives being listed on the prohibited list, teenagers were resorting to using ordinary kitchen knives, which were not prohibited.
Now even the possession of those knives will attract a two-year penalty unless the owner can show a good reason for having it, such as fishing.
The Bill was drafted by Reverend Fred Nile following the stabbing of 15-year-old schoolboy John Danieli after a New Year's Eve celebration in Manly two years ago.
The assailant was never charged over the assault. At the time, carrying a knife attracted just a $550 fine.
Opposition legal affairs spokesman Greg Smith has been calling for the new laws for the past two years.
The Daily Telegraph has learned the Government will today vote to support a Private Members Bill introduced by Mr Nile.
It is believed the Opposition will also vote to support the crackdown. Attorney-General John Hatzistergos yesterday confirmed the Government would support the Bill.
Suburbs in Sydney's southwest and west have emerged as the most dangerous, with at least 26 people stabbed each week - 34 people have been stabbed to death in Sydney in the past three years.
There were 1300 stabbings in Sydney in 2007 and 2319 across NSW.
so if your gonna go around carrying a knife, i suggest you carry a fishing rod also....

[QUOTE=minux;1331645]Why exactly would you need to carry a leatherman?
because they are a very handy tool to have and if your a tradey u would use one daily many times thats wny you would need to carry one![]()
People are still going to carry knives. The problem lies with the people, new laws are not always going to solve the problem.
So wouldnt it be in your toolbox? Not sure you need to keep it in your pocket 24/7?
I am not saying do not have valid reasons to carry these, but surely if your not on a worksite its not hard to keep it in a toolbox? We used them in the army, never carried them around when we were off base etc though lol.

Knifes are for pussies, it's a good lawmost of the time having one will end up getting yourself stabed with your own knife anyway
Bottle Opener DUHH! (Young and Jacksons for example who dont give the band opened bottles!)
As well as being ready for whatever happens, you've always got a quick tool available. When i do installs at customers places i make sure i have mine on me. There's also one in my car and one at home.
Great to have wherever you are to fix whatever. I do however know the damage one can do having stabbed myself with one. It doesn't matter if the laws exist, people need to know how to solve things without resorting to violence.
I have a leatherman on me when I'm at work, usually on my belt when I head home as well. Use it for heaps of things, untying fences, retying fences mainly.
Whoever doubts the usefulness of leathermans, obviously hasn't had much life experience. Ever around when someone says "Anyone got a screwdriver/scissors/knife/file/pliers?" A leatherman solves all these issues.
I'm all for the laws. Its good something is being done before we end up like the UK with a stabbing every 2nd day.
btw guys, minux isn't saying you can't 'own' a multitool etc, he's saying theres no need to carry it 24/7.

The only argument that there is against this is that a leatherman has a knife in it... but there are respsonsible people who wont use it against another human, then there is the scum who would and deserve to rot. But whether or not it's illegal it's not going to stop anyone. What about speeding? There's speed cameras everywhere, speeding is against the law, but yet so many people decide to speed.

Going to the pub, well, depending on which pub yes. Some of the equipment that a friend's band uses could require the tools. And this would mean me walking through the city at night with it on me.
As for shopping, nope, not needed there, but the only time i go shopping is in my lunch breaks when i'm working across the road from Highpoint Shopping Centre. Thus depending on what i've been doing at work i may be carrying one.
One great example of when it's really handy is when your mate is driving and they have an EA Falcon. That friend never carries around a tool kit, and the leatherman has come in handy a few times with that vehicleOne time... on the way to a pub for dinner.
There would have to be some sort of limit, perhaps under 5 or 10cm multi tool allowed or something..
I used to keep one on my belt as it was handy if I needed to quickly fix something, had a few instances that I forgot to take it off when going to the hardware store or up the street, I think I will be a bit more careful now...
Seriously though these people know its illegal to carry knives, so it isn't going to deter anyone but hopefully they will be increasing searches in "hot spots" in conjunction with this....
