just left the city, got to alexandra and nicholson to turn onto alexandra and the freeway and there'd been a huge stack. an racv ute was on it's roof with a fair bit of damage and there was a maroon vr/vs stato with the front pretty caved in. not sure what happened but it looked recent, cops had only just started arriving and no ambos yet. i'd avoid the area if you can. the GF said she saw one of the drivers sitting in the curb, but not sure what happened to the other.
hope the stato was no-one here.
Melbourne CBD = fail.

Yeah stuff the city for driving. Seriously, it's my worst nightmare.
You want to try going there when you are from the bush, geees instant trip to psycho land
yeah for sure dude. Within a 20km radius of the CBD, all melbourne roads are disgusting. Don't even get me started on peak hour. I live in East Doncaster, sometimes have to work in Camberwell starting at like 8. Only about 15-20 k's away with a bit of freeway in between, takes me almost 45 minutes most days.
Sorry but Melbourne is overpopulated, no wonder the transport system is failing, not to mention that it is archaic in design and coordination. We cannot support such a massive influx of new immigrants.

I believe, now I could be wrong - but the main reason for a fail in the public transport system (primarily trains) would be the fact that all these new homes are being build and populated in the west sububs - caroline springs ETC, then you have Cranbourne, Packenham, Berwick areas (I pay attention to the east myself) that have just BOOMED, yet the train systems havent changed MUCH.
You are totally right, that the build up has been in the Western Suburbs, however, you are also right that Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston, etc have all been built up as well. However, the centre suburbs that form a ring around the CBD, i.e. St. Kilda, South Yarra, Camberwell, Hawthorn etc...all those suburbs are so densely populated it isn't funny. Everyone also owns cars, everyone drives to work, drives to the station or drives to get to public transport. The train line failures that we have been hearing so much have been on the western lines, the Pakenham/Frankston lines, Lilydale lines etc...
To deviate more from the original topic, it is not just the fact that our cities cannot cope due to the current infrastructure, the excessive immigration which currently stands at (correct me if I'm wrong) around 180,000 per month, to take an educated guess, mostly Indian's and Vietnamese and Chinese. Economically and agriculturally, Australia has insufficient arable land, water and ability to support such a rapidly growing population. Victorian/Melbourne water supplies currently stand at about 28-30% (The last rates I heard about). We are at what, like stage 5 water restrictions. We barely have enough water to last us, and the drought is by no means over. We don't have enough land available to erect new farms, even if we did, we don't have enough water to sustain them. This would also create an economic problem, sure with a larger population that could create a larger workforce, however, with the rise in people looking for a job, that means new jobs must be created. The list goes on and I could go on forever. However, to wrap up my rant, I believe that Australia is overpopulated, not getting overpopulated, IS overpopulated. And it is not just affecting our infrastructure, it is contaminating society, our culture and suffocating ourselves economically, socially and our infrastructure is also falling victim.
(Sorry for deviating so much from OP's topic)
lol yeah! the wife and I allways go ok we are going to Melbourne, all good until half way through the day. Later in the day all you can think is I want to get out of this hell hole!. Lately it's even been pretty hard to get back on the bridge with all the road works around it. But yeah once you get on it and are heading home you get this big feeling of relaxation and are like man I hate that place! good riddance!. Last time we were leaving some asian chick in with a full car load of her friends was hurrying us up getting onto the bridge while we were waiting on traffic then came past pulling a stupid face, my wife gave her the finger and screamed LEARN TO DRIVE BITCH!. It was funny as
lots of tension!. The Soccer mums in BMW 4wds that try and sideswipe you at full throttle in the inner city are the worst, everyone seems to be in such a hurry to go no where important in that place.
P.S it is actaully a good view from the bridge at nighton the way home is just icing on the cake:P
