    Default Mountain biking?

Anybody here do much mountain biking on the side? I hit the trails from time to time. We've got some just a few blocks away, but nothing truly mountainous as I live in northern Texas where it is flat as can be

I use a Cannondale Jekyll 900SL, needs a new crank and bottom bracket though as it has been seeing daily use as my commuter.

    Whatcha got!?

I try to get out to the trails at Arthurs Seat.

Its a bit tricky because I need a mate with a ute to get the bike up there so I don't get out there as often as I would like.

Oh, I have a 2003 Da Bomb Mindbomb frame, 2006 Marzocchi FRIII fonts, 2008 Marzocchi TST R 9.5x3 rear with a 450lb spring. and Hayes HFX-9 hydrolic brakes.

    Yeah, you're luck...

Me, not so much, you've seen my little car... and I would need to get roof racks for it that I can put the bike on without removing the front wheel as it has a 20mm front axle and is a pain in the arse to remove. lol

I used to go riding with my mates through the forest/tracks/bush often but now they are all married/gay/given up so I just use it for transport to mix up driving a bit . I don't have anything ridiculous like that thos ^ it's a hardtail cross country bike, weighs about 10.0kgs

I go a fair bit up here in Brisbane.

Mt Cootha and Daisy Hill are the usual spots for me.

I ride a 2004 Avanti Barracuda XC. Awesome bike, light frame is made in New Zealand and all the componentry is Specialized and Shimano.

Cops an absolute hiding as I do downhill with it but it still rides the same the day I bought it.

I mostly commute on mine now as my car has been down since June. Temps are starting to dip down in the 0*C range in the mornings so it's getting harder to ride my usual commute of 12km especially when the winds get up to 60kph + gusts here as there's nothing to stop it on the plains.

I've enjoyed it up to this point though, I usually cruise around 32kph and my max sprinting is limited by the gears to about 56kph (can't keep that up long though unless I'm drafting a bus). Love passing the posers on their $2000+ road bikes and their spandex as I am loaded down with a backpack and gear wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt

i've had a few bikes over the last few years, stayed loyal to the one brand though.

originally got a mongoose grand marquis, but i broke the frame in half haha o well

    http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-...94617_5800.jpg

then they sent me a new frame, mongoose teocali super, was more of an all mountain frame, but with such heavy components from the grand marquis, it was hard to go uphill. but that bike got knocked off out of my shed one night

    http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-...94618_6047.jpg

so then i got a new bike off insurance, got another 'goose, this time a black diamond triple. havent been able to get out and use it was much as i would like due to uni atm, but i have sessioned up mt stromlo in canberra a couple of times. bit of a drive but was worth it.

i'll put a photo up of it soon.

got a road bike too, a felt ft-90 i think, entry level with tiagra groupset. does the job just for a training bike, might fill the frame full of lead balls to make it heavier to ride, just for something different haha.

Yes, those are slicks! Love the lower rolling resistance for the 12km commute to work!

that would make it so much easier to pedal on the roads. do car drivers hate cyclists heaps over where you are or is it just over here?

    Oh, they hate us plenty.

There's no real bike lanes here in this town, the US is pretty lax about that. Cyclists have to risk it with using a lane or hug the gutter and hope to not get mirrored by a large truck.

I do my best to go at a good speed, there's times I'm matching the speed of the vehicles so the pain of getting swatted by a mirror isn't as great lol!

I get along the Dandenong Creek Trail with my
trusty XC hardtail during the warmer months.
Getting sick of dodging kamakaze kids on trail
& monkey bikes though. Would also like to see
the dogs that are being exercised along the
creek to be on a leash!
Too many near misses and one too many stacks.
Don't get me started on the horses.......
    I'm not afraid.

got a cheapo Norco Bushpilot that has earned its value, given it an absolute beating. i ride to work in it so most parts have been replaced, currently upgrading the forks to cheapo RockShox and putting on a front disc, 9 spd. upgrade, clipless pedals, new wheels.

it's cheaper to mod your bike than your car

hmm, you should run singlespeed on that thing, get rid of that derailler which easily gets bent in a stack.

    I've got a $120 K-Mart special (that's all I was willing to spend, as I wanted something I wasn't afraid to break)
Normally ride it along the Eastlink paths for exercise, go to Gippsland to ride downhill through the bush; or Koala Park (10km N of Ballarat) to ride along the walking tracks.

yeah camelbacks are the go, and you can carry your spares in the bag that they make too. thats what i use when attemting to do some xc on a freeride bike haha.

this is what my bike is, just i have a bash guard on the front chainring.

i cant seem to get the rear shock set right for my weight, riding style, might get a non-air shock.
