hey
what are the laws on securing a car on a car trailer in NSW.
hat are the legal ways to do it??
thanks
car must be on backwards secured by occy straps lol.
SIR LS1
the two ton go kart
Last time we trailered a car, we got some chain, looped it around the back axle (one chain for each side) and secured it with a u-bolt (or whatever they're called), then attached the other end of the chain to the anchoring points on the trailer the same way. I don't remember how we did the front, but the cross member or something would probably be good.
Oh and the brake was on too.
Ive never had an issue with the way its facing and actually I rarely see one thats reversed on???
Dont know what the requirements are, but Ive never had an issue with it being secure from the front and rear ie around the control arms, handbrake on etc
I have always been told to just drive it on for weight distribution. If the car was reversed on it would cause the rear of the towing vehicle to lift up causing traction issues, not to mention a really light rear end.
As for securing the car, always used ratchet straps around the rear axle or tow hooks on the rear and either the tow hooks on the front or lower suspension arms.

all i remember is last time i towed it my uncle used his trailer and he secured it. i chained down the towing points at the front and a chain over the tail shaft on top of the diff.. and in park and hand brake.
i just want to know if i can just ratchet down the wheels like they do on tow trucks, if you look on Penrith Auto Recovery Online : Towing and Car Transportation Service for the Penrith Community, Western Sydney N.S.W, Australia. they only tie down wheels..??

Don't put a car on backwards. Ya want as much weight on the draw bar as possible otherwise it might start swaying. If it ever does start to sway, the best way to fix it is to pull it out by accelerating a bit...but it can get pretty scary when ya fishtailing on the road at 80-100k's with a car on the back lol. If the trailer doesn't have suspension, tie it down by the diff, and around the wheels somewhere on the front, so the car can still use it's own suspension when ya go over bumps, otherwise ya snap trailer axles. If the trailer has suspension, which most do, just go from anywhere structural. I think by law ya need to have the car secured by 4 points. But don't use the winch as one.
I wouldn't put the car in gear, coz if it does come off it will prolly cause damage to the gearbox, and really if it's secured properly ya won't need the handbrake on either.

The best way that I have found (driving Trucks for a living not long ago) is tie it down by the the wheels and place the vehicle weight foward a bit (not to much) to push down on the draw/tow bar but keep it fairly even.
I do what I do, Not because I have to, Not because I want to, But because I can
thanks. i think i might tie it down at the two towing points and on the diff like i did before (well, my uncle)
will that be legal
oh, and i just remembered for anyone else make sure you wire any moving points shut or you can get a massive fine
Ive been told turbocharged is an exception - when their towed by car carriers their supposed to be reversed on to stop the turbo from drying out (or some rubbish). Dont know if thats true or not - couldve just been a company policy to stop claims of damaged turbos on new cars
or you could put a plastic bag over the turbo
Nobody picked up that he said occy straps? the elastic thingos with a hook on each end.
