few years back i used to ride my mates YZF250. he end up selling it and now wants to get another bike. and i want to get one too.
anyone recommend a good bike around the 2-3 grand mark. i dont want to get a 250 cause it was bit much for me being an amature an all. but need to know the benefits of which brand and cc etc. any help would be good.
if the 250f was a bit much a 125cc two stroke seems the goods. around the 3 grand mark gets you around 2000 ish honda cr125r or similar year yamaha yz125.
nothing much seemed to go wrong with them, i had an 03 honda cr125, as long as you're kinda handy with the spanners and don't leave things until they're absolutely stuffed it will be ace.
new piston and rings doesnt take long, i think i did mine on my cr in a bit over an hour haha.
yeah rego is death
2000 onwards 4 strokes will be out of that price range like above go 2 stroke 4 power n easier on the pocket if not i recommend a xr250- there bulletproof
shhh now PUPPET
I agree with getting an xr 250 especially if your learning to ride. I've got an 02 model which can be yours for 2k.
^^^thats a great price up for swaps???

go a honda 125. my neighbour had one and it was unbreakable... and he can break most things.

leaning towards a 2 stroke 250. opinions?
in my opinion mate, all roughly the same. i like the kx cus of the kyb suspension, its always suited me. you'll pay bit more for a yz becuase everyone thinks they're a million times better, and cr's are great but they dont make them anymore so again might pay bit more.
but if your learning to ride, i'd steer straight away from a 2stroke 250 mate, id say it'll scare you shitless on the dirt. they absolutely cain
well thinking of going a 250 now cause im always chasing more power. dont want to get a 125 then 2 months down the track know how to ride but wanting more power.
fair enough mate, but remember with the 2bangers you really have to thrash them, keep them in powerband or the spark plug will foul up. 125's really do go pretty hard if they're in good nic, mine gets to 130km/h and pops up in 1st-5th.. its pretty scary lol
I went from an 80 straight to a 250 didnt have too many probs just took it easy till i got a feel for the power and size of the bike, also make sure you get all the proper protective gear.
depends which sparkplug you use.. racing plugs tend to foul up but you can sacrifice a bit of performance for a standard plug and they usually last alot longer, in any case always make sure you carry a spare with you so you dont get stranded.
Power is measured in DECIBEL
i agree there mate, can use a standard ngk and be right for a bit longer but i found my bike runs like crap on them, use NGK R series plugs, running a hotter plug also helps alot but 2 strokes were never really meant for puttering around, they need a good kick in the guts
Whats this fouling plugs business? When my mate had my CR250 before I bought it he never once changed the plug in all the years he had it. When I pulled it out it looked a bit old and crummy and the gap was outrageously big but hey it diddnt stop it running. It was a standard plug but now has some NGK standard heat range race plug which hasnt given me any trouble. But I also havnt ridden it in a fair while.
Btw I went from an XR 80 to not riding for a few years then to the CR250. I remembered the first decent ride I had on it my arms were killing of arm pump after about 10mins lol. 125's are still a bit of fun. I helped a mate rebuild his CR125 and the thing probably goes harder than my 250 and still wheelstands just by pulling the throttle (my 250 is LOOONG overdue for a top end).
Oh yeah and 2 STROKE FTW
i'd say as a beginner get a 125...but if your power hungry get a 250 2 stroke...absolutely insane to ride compaired to the 125s...i'd say either cr, yz or rm...personally i like yzs....because theyre blue lol...but the only 250 i rode was a mates cr 250 04 model i think....he got that for around 3500....about a year ago in good nick too. but he couldve been lucky.
*waits for foams comment on the powa of 500cc 2-strokes*
or should I make that 490cc![]()
lol I'm here! damm straight 500cc Two stroke, do it right or go home
(p.s I rode one on the street for 4 years? and never fouled a plug, that's been a myth since castor oil left the scene 20 years agoor maybe a bike that's running VERY badly)

Fun times ^, wasn't all that kicking worth it![]()
hey jecs, when you say you want to take it on a track, is that one you've made or an actual mx track? power isn't the be all and end all for mx bikes, and on a super dooper rough track its highly unlikely you would be able to get it wide open on a 250 if you haven't had heaps of experience.
it depends if you like to tear around paddocks with it wide open or hit the tracks. if you like to tear around paddocks go the 250 2 stroke if tracks go the 125 2 stroke.
be prepared for a few scary experiences on the 250 with a bump you didn't see taking you over the bars, please get some protective gear. i just bought a leatt brace and it will really help when i eat shit and die one day haha.

i never fouled a plug on my 2 stroke mxers either. but now theres these fancy things called 4 stroke bikes, only bad thing is they dont smell nice.
haha i love to hear people talking about the 'powerband' with 2 strokes. a bloke i went to school with once told me that his powerband was broken on his yz, i nearly fell off the chair!
don't forget all the vibes that will be in the 2 stroke bikes, keep an eye on all of the bolts and invest in a few litres of loctite haha.
