If you mean the drive shafts you will need an allen key(8mm from memory)and some muscle as they can be tight. With the right tool and a ratchet you will get it done.

vpcalais6: May I ask why you want to go minispool? Apart from STELTHY (who will swear black and blue the contrary) I have heard nothing but horror stories with Mini Spool's in IRS setups. The axe's snap as if your axels are made from toothpicks.

They're also illegal, and if treated incorrectly, will wear out your tire-wear on the rear - but im guessing you've researched this.

Apart from 'my mates uncles neighbour told me' people, i've heard nothing but good things. Go figure
If you do burnouts with an LSD, you will also have bad tYre wear.....

And on the axles, over a year with the stock VP diff, never snapped an axle.

These aren't going off 2, 3, 4 parties, this is straight from the horses mouth mate

Of course burnouts with LSD/Single pegger/Mini or Full spool will cause tyre wear.

Care to start a thread and list allllllll of these horror stories?
I drive my car harder than most, in fact my diff builder built my diff as a prototype which is now sold to everyone else because i didn't break it (and he specifically said, if i break it, don't bother coming back)

All this in an IRS equipped car. Of course, there are always people who can't drive full stop, there probably the horses mouth's you've been speaking to

ok - Here's an opinion from first hand experience (you have heard it before but seem to have conveniently forgot this one ).

For a daily driven street car spool's are daft - the wheel hop whilst making tight radius turns is significant and annoying whilst you need to be mindful of under steer on turns.

On the flip side, for the track, burnout pad or drag strip they are the thing to have. Significant gains can be found with one.

They have their place however your shopping trolley that gets carted to the local Coles is not one of them.

Everyone has their own opinion and their own setup they like to run. He said 'horror' story, to me saying that the second you put a spool in, your tailshaft snaps in half, your axles shear off, and your tyres will be bald before getting out the driveway.

Thats what my comments is in regards too.

Interested to know how much track work those axles have done. Considering the general consensus that spool = snapped axle. If i havn't, and you havn't surely something is bullshit.....

My tyres are not the stickiest rubber in the world - will be interesting how long they last with semi slicks. Although I suspect they should be fine as I am after quick tidy laps and they shouldn't have the shock loads that 1/4 mile starts would give them. Well if i'm doing it right anyway

One thing i don't like about spools is the fact that you can torque stretch and axle (twist) at the end of the splines, just by daily cornering. Not saying everyone will - it comes down to sensible driving and the quality of the steel in the axle...

It's a fact - nodular steels under repeated flexion (flexing while torquing) will cause microcracks to form around the nodules of phosphorous in the steel. Obviously - if the granular structure of the steel is really good, it happens less. I can't comment on the quality of the standard axle - I have never heard of any breaking in an Ecotec of later commodore - but I certainly have heard of it happening in other beam axle and IRS rear ends.

The reason I don't use on is understeer. I like cars that turn the same way under all throttle settings.
