This happened in my Vr, not to sure if it will be same as in yours, but the ignition barrel 'collapsed', had to have a new one put in by a locksmith.

The locksmith told me it happens all the time to commodores, he said his company was doing 15-20 a week...

    my vz did that also.
called RACQ and he blew the dust out of it with an air compressor and the key eventually turned
he said it was a common problem

Pulling the barrel out tomz to take it to a locksmith as mine is getting worse so time to do it before it locks up.. The guy said to me roughly $100 or so to do a new barrel and cut a new key and replace battery while he is there..

I paid $250 to have mine done, but that was on a sunday afternoon and he had to come out to me. Not sure what it will cost you, but I think it will be around there.

I would try blowing it out with an air compressor as the other guy said, a lot cheaper than a new barrel.

New barrel, key and battery for $100 sounds strange to me... considering a key is around that alone, a battery is that again, and a new barrel is easily 100-200$

I work for RACV and see it all the time, easy to fix, what ya need to do is remove the steering column covers it has one screw in it and two clips, then you need to take out the indicator stalk which is clipped in by two tags then you will see on top of the barrel a 1/8 hole on the top you really need to get the key to come off steering lock ( use graphite powder put a fair amount in and work the key it will come off lock it may take a bit ) then you get it to accessory and put a drill bit or screw driver in the 1/8 hole and it will pop out, holden sell the barrels that come with the pins to code the new one to your key its a lot cheaper to get a lock smith to do it holden charge $120 to code it, you will need a new screw and switch on the the back of the barrel as the end of the barrell will be broken off in it and it will be worn the way to get it back in is to put the key it the tumbler have it set to accessory and in the lock barrel there is a small bit that needs to be pushed down once its down then its locked in slide the new barrel in with the key in it and is should click and lock in then fit the new switch ( make shore its lined up the the same spot ) and it will be fine

My bad, I read your post wrong, thought you meant you were getting a new car battery and having someone doing all the work

I had this same problem just the other day... I eventually got it to turn by pushing hard on the small bit metal bit that connects with the metal cylinder around the lock... making sure it had good contact...

Key & Barrel all fixed. Barrel re coded IE new internals, a new remote head and re programmed and a key cut. All for $91. Bloody awesome now it turns so nicely and the remote works from up to 15m away...

    Reviving an old thread.
I had a similar problem and this is what google turned up. vq rat, your post in particular was very helpful.
I'd like to add that coding the ignition barrel is pretty easy and can be done yourself in about half an hour. I just bought a new ignition barrel from Holden (about $56) and did the rest myself. The local locksmith wanted $120 to code the barrel I was to supply, and $160 if he supplied!

If the main pin at the back of the lock is removed, the whole assembly can slide out. Make sure you leave the key in to stop the pins coming out.
Then it's just a matter of making careful note of what numbers are on each pin and matching that order with the new pins supplied with the new barrel.
