ABN is easy to get from ATO.
You just have to get an invoice book and write an invoice each week. You are regarded as self employed also which means pay your own tax, no workers comp, hoiliday pay etc. $20p/h sounds a bit rough to me.

applying for an abn is easy, well in nsw atleast. you need to contact the relevant department for your state. If you do a google search, you should be able to download the application forms.

But in saying that.... don't do it mate, $20ph is **** all as a contractor. Work out how much you'd be losing in super/sick/hols/ etc and maccas will be looking like a better option, than flogging your ass out. If your on an hourly rate he will push you hard to work, and you will most likely need your own public/property liability insurance.

example i own my own construction business. when i tell people i charge $65p/h they think im rolling in it. But fact is i dont get super, sick leave, holidays, rain days, travel etc. take out all overheads like car, phone, insurances, and down time, im pretty much on par with a carpenter on wages, working full time, that works for someone else, knocks off at 3 each day, and doesn't have to think about the job until 7 the next morning.

try applying for builders laborer position or something like that, Ive talked to a few on different sites, and some are on up to $30p/h. could lead to a mature aged apprenticeship.

Ummm... Not really. Removalists charge by the hour so It's not like they are going to complain if they take longer than expected. It means they get paid more. Last removalists we had took a 1 hour lunch break at midday. When removalists charge roughly $100 to $130 per hour, thats an expensive lunch.

$20 per hour for a removalist seems fair enough to me. Mind you it can be back breaking work.

I have a second job working two afternoons per week. I might make $6000 from that per year. I probably should have an ABN but I don't.
Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!

at the moment $20 p/h is a lot better then what most people are making, there is a very limited ammount of work around and it wont get any better the closer you get to x-mas,next year will start to pick up again when all these new projects get under way. . .

Just to add, you DO NOT NEED to claim GST if your gross income is under $75,000 per year.
