    Default Toyota MR2 - Opinions

    Howdy,

I'm going into searching for a Toyota MR2 1990+ model. Anyone got any opinions/information about these particular cars?
The engine is in the boot?

its kind of gay the engine is at the back (stereo wise), I love my stereos and like big bass.. how am I meant to get bass without a boot for the sub? meh.

How good are these on fuel economy?

Pretty sure the motor is at the front the turbo motor is a 3s gte and pretty sure they are front wheel drive.

My bad, i do know they are a good little motor and capable of some good power, there are some people swapping these into the sprinters

I dunno Im kinda both minds about them. I think they look ugly as sin, but they do have some balls.

Next door neighbour used to own one, it was an early model not to sure on year, but yeah I got sick of looking at it.

if the engine is in the rear wouldnt that mean the boot compartment is now at the front under the bonnet? that would make for a sweet sound system i reckon

My mate has one. They look nice, kinda have a dated interior and are bloody cramped. I'm not a tall guy (less than 6 ft) and I struggled for room in there.

Everyone raves about them, not sure why, they look ugly, handle like a pooh and arent exactly fast. Its like a poor mans mid life crisis car imho.

i would reckon they wouldnt be bad on fuel, theyre only a small engine so as long as you drive sensibly you should get reasoable fuel mileage, like any car i supose

Well I had a mate with one, I thought it was shit untill I drove it, it had decent power and inane handling these things don't need brakes for courners, I rkon a turbo and it would be good, the look of them is ****ing yuk... I also has a hard time getting in it, but I'm 6"4 140 kgs

They are o.k until something breaks, then you better get a second mortgage. It'll be a bit hard to find one that hasn't been flogged everywhere, my suggestion, if your serious on one, go take it to a reputable mechanic, and tell him to go over it inside and out, and back to front, give you a list of any problems, and use it, to either,
    1. Walk away, or
    2. Drive the price down further.

I'm in search of a Coupe. <$7500. Not much on the market. My dad's got a Ford Probe, which is awesome to drive ... just very hard to find one. I liked the fact that the MR2 has only 2 seats!! I hate taking people other than the GF ... with the MR2 I have an excuse lol. I'm trying to downsize.. I've got a VS commodore and it's just too big. Plus I've had the VS for over 2 years now... and since the beginning I got it.. got a service done and had like $2000 worth of repairs which I hadn't fixed up yet. Apparently needs gearbox recon.. drives nicely tho. I'm just after a change and the MR2 is a smaller engine and is kind of sporty.

there heavy and under powered in non turbo form, a 1.8 lancer is quicker and has a bigger boot, and is cheaper to run,

but they are nice looking, and handle well,

    basicly a poor mans ferrari

oh and there mid mount, so there is a boot as well in the rear, the spare wheel is in front, which is a 13 inch, which is fine until you have to fit anything bigger when you have a flat, the bonnet wont close

have you looked at holden/opel calibras? a mate has one, and its pretty nice in my opinion. if your going to have a look atthem, go for the all wheel drive model prefer turbo too, pretty damn quick i can tell ya that.

Yeah I quite like Calibra's. They look nice, theres a red one on the corner of my street. Quite cheap to. Looking at carsales now, theres quite a few for around the 5 grand mark. Although, they do have 4 seats it is a coupe though.

Just go buy a ute, problem solved.
