Learning to drive (two weeks before getting my Red P's) Learnt on a VX II V8 Calais, and the day before we traded it in for my dads current VE calais, he took me down the back of where we live and let me smoke it (only a tiny bit) but more so it was experiencing near full acceleration..
My mum has less points on her full license then I do on my green P's (After a speeding fine)...
Oh, and I did motorkhannas with a car club i'm a member of, and had our 00' Honda CRV sideways drifting through mudd...That taught me more car control then anything. And the fact I learnt how to drive out of a slide as opposed to just freaking out and spinning out...
This is such a quality thread....
I have so many stories that it's not even funny.
I distinctively remember taking my dads 2WD Dual Cab Rodeo 4WDING, my dad's an advanced driving instructor at Sandown so he knows his shit. I'll tell you what though, he had that thing so sideways that I was looking at my mirror going straight.
I also remember back when I was young and we were trading in our VS Berlina, dad took me for a fun last drive haha.
My best memory is learning manual when I first bought my ute, I was on my L's pulling into the tyre shop to get new tyres for my ute for a rwc, I got stuck in the steep driveway and stalled. After my frustration grew and the thought of my tyres being replaced I dropped the clutch and bagged the ute up the driveway. Needless to say Dad was not happy at all...
I only have fond memories, My parents wanted the best for me (Not that anyone elses didn't) but they had learned from experience in how to train a learner as I am the youngest in my family.
I enjoyed my learners and my parents kept a level head. Probably the only thing worth remembering was the constant blah blah blah from them as I was trying to drive, remember this, do that, notice how, etc, etc All in all it paid, off.
Back in 1984, my dad organized a family road trip to visit my grandma. It was a 2000km+ return journey in the family Holden (Kingswood?) The car didnt have air conditioning and was a bit rough in its handling. We listened to Tom Jones, Abba, Boney M and sang all the way to grandmas house. On the last few kilometers home to grandmas, dad pulled off the road and chose to play tom jones " Green green grass of home" and he said to everyone in the car. "I always wanted to play this song when we were coming home"
Last June 23, 2008 I buried my dad and one of the songs that were played during his wake was "Green green grass of home"
Fast forward to 2011, on his 3rd anniversary... my car stereo played that song again and I pulled over at the side of the road and remembered the family road trip. If someone had told me that I would be driving my own Holden 27 years later after '84, I wouldnt have believed it.
All of my mates from university, still remember my dad's green holden. As a kid I was envious of the flashy beemers, mercs when the family had to ride around in the Kingswood. but I never knew the Kingswood and the memory of my dad driving us to school and back would be the lasting good memory.
