Did anyone hear about the Ford Explorer that was stuck on cruise control yesterday. The driver was driving near Frankston yesterday and he could not get it of no matter what he did. What else can we say it is a Ford. Here's the link.

Sooo, he couldnt stop the car using the brakes, but eventually stopped the car using the foot brake and handbrake?
Sounds like a case of asking how a mentally disabled person got a licence...
Mr Weir, who recently arrived in Melbourne from Queensland, says he was stuck on 80km/h on the freeway and shutting off the engine and hitting the brakes had no effect.Mr Weir eventually stopped the car by repeatedly jumping on the foot brake and pulling the handbrake.

Yeah its like that case in America where the guy died because his floor mat got caught around the accelerator and just kept driving. Seriously, people are ****ing retarded.
Ahh nevermind, I missed this part
Nuff said.Mr Weir, who recently arrived in Melbourne from Queensland

Didn't he think to put the car in neutral? Some People are ****ing retarded...
I could think of probably half a dozen ways he could have turned it off.
It would appear as though the only thing he managed to turn off was his brain....
I read about this on our own little internal news system. He's admitted to a fair bit in this one.
- Calls Ford after he realises the cruise control is stuck: Use mobile phone whilst driving.
- Calls 000 for help: Another use phone whilst driving (up to two already!).
- On the other end of the line, Sgt Marnie Goldsmith urges him to move the car into the emergency lane of the Eastern Fwy and turn off the engine.: Fail to obey 'Emergency Stopping Lane Only' sign.
- When his vehicle is forced into oncoming lanes because of banked-up traffic, Sgt Goldsmith calmly urges him to jump on the brakes and pull the handbrake as hard as he can.: Fail to keep left of center, drive on reserve (median strip), careless drive and manner dangerous just to top it all off.
Could throw in a conduct endangering life. I can't wait to see what the results of the testing on the car reveal.
Has nothing to do with "being a Ford". Holden has had more than enough of it's fair share of recalls and epic car failure. Take a look at the VE. That's an abortion on wheels.

Chase!
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
If you listen to the 000 call on news.com.au, he tried taking the key out of the ignition, and also moving the gearstick (another ad for driving manuals). I think instead of calling him a tool, think of how you would be in his shoes.
Now, he might not be the smartest driver, but he had the nouse to stay on the freeway, call 000 (sounded like he was on hands-free/bluetooth anyway, which is legal) and stay calm.
It's a very scary experience when you car stuffs up on the freeway, so credit must go to him for not panicking and causing a massive accident where people would have died.
yeah he was using a handsfree he was interviewed on he 7pm project and they tried to get him for driving while using a phone
So he is expecting us to believe that somehow, transmission jammed, ignition failed, brakes failed etc yet then used brakes to stop?
As a matter of testing we took a friends mums explorer out just 30 mins ago, a 2002 auto model. Set cruise, moved to neutral switched off engine fine, reset cruise, turned off ignition car slowed down. Amazing really. Fail to see how cruise failure could override a MECHANICAL shifter to shift to neutral, more so I fail to see how a cruise failure could over ride the ignition.
The guy is nothing but a clown especially as he used his BRAKES to stop after saying it wouldnt work...

I don't buy the excuse that he couldn't turn the ignition off..... Seems like a lot of things that coincidently went wrong at the same time.
This sort of scenario seems to happen all the time, with cruise or throttle locking on etc. A similar thing happened in Europe, where the cruise stuck on a Lexus before it eventually ploughed into a tree at something like 200kph killing all occupants. One of the passengers phones was found to have footage of the event, once again it would seem no-one thought of switching the ignition off.
I think a more reasonable explanation is the driver panicked - in which case all rational decision making and coordination tends to go astray. And it happens, doesn't mean the driver is stupid etc. With this in mind, maybe cars should be fitted with a clearly visible, easily accessable big red kill switch like motorbikes have ? Makes sense to me.
I guess he didnt think to try removing the fuses or yank the wiring loom from under the dash ??? more than one way to stop any car .
FORD = Forget Our Ride Dad.....
Exactly my thoughts.
He couldn't get the car stopped using the brakes when he was on an open freeway, but as soon as he got into frankston where the road became tighter, traffic lights are around and more traffic, all of a sudden the brakes magically started working, he pulled the car up and managed to make it stay there.
And then he goes on the 7pm Project? This guy is just some lose who wanted to get his mug on the TV and get a day off work.
OR, he REALLY need to have his license taken away because he has no bloody clue what to do in an emergency situation.
I'm sorry, but I could have had that car stopped in about 5min without the need for breaking the law and using my mobile phone while driving.
