hey
i have been offered an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. i asked the boss what are the wages like and he thinks for a first year apprentice it would be around $200 a week for 40 hours... does this sound right?
is there anywhere i can look to see how much I am meant to be earning? or is anyone a painter themselves?
cheers![]()

dont hold me to that, that is what i was told
apparently id be on a 6 month probationary period first. i dont want to be there for 6 months and then my boss says he doesnt want me. so then i wouldnt have done year 12 for nothing

VL_5SPEED, that could be what you're paid, but base rate is about 220 p/w for most trades. i started off on $6.30 p/h, then it went up to $8.50 p/h after a few months. apprentice wages suck, but you have to start somewhere, and people arent going to be willing to pay big money for inexperienced workers.
to the OP, if you have an interest in doing that kind of work, then i'd say do it. but if you're just doing it cos you have been offered the job and want to start earning some money, and dont have much of an interest in the job, then stay in school and wait for the right thing to come up.
we have too many wankers come through our work who are deadbeats and just wanted an apprenticeship for the money (regardless of the shitful wages)
depends on the trade and the employer. first year chippy i earn 390 for a 38 hr week
if its too loud your too old
Lol. I'm a 3rd year sparky. Just got paid 996.47 (:P) for 5 + 1 days.. no ot.. But yeah. That's crap pay, if you can survive off it now though and you enjoy painting and decorating then go for it.
When it comes to apprenticeship wages most can't see the forest for the trees. The real figure you need to look at is what you will earn as a qualified tradesman. I know of plenty in a variety of trades that earn an absolute fortune whilst some other trades don't fare anywhere near as well.
Keep in mind that apprentice wages do go up quite frequently plus there are all sorts of government handouts for tools etc. Unless you are very lucky expect to be on probation for 3 - 6 months before you are signed up.
Reaper
i was on $5.90 an hour wen i first started then went up after probation to $6.30 shit money but now im fully qualified and running a workshop and it was all worth it
I was a trainee Tyre Fitter, Wheel aligner for 12 months at $6.11 an hour, working 5 days a week and saturday morning i was clearing $254 a week or something stupid, once my traineeship finished i went up to $7,30 i cracked the shits and they put it up too $9.90 then once 18 i cracked the shits again because i was working 4 days a week and saturday making my 38hours a week n not having to pay me all the over time, I was getting **** all for a week, i Cracked it n said up my pay or ill quite and you will be ****ed without me cause they didn't know how to wheel align or have the no how, They said sure sure whatever, I had 5 weeks Sick leave owing, so i Went to the doctor went cough cough i have the flu and need a new job, so he gave me 3 weeks off on sick leave, then they wanted me back and said will pay you for 6 days a week n all that, i let it go they ended up offering me $10,25 an hour i got another two weeks of with paywhich was driving them crazy i gave my notice on another sick leave notice to **** them over, even more multi million dollar Company (beaurepaires) and is that stingy.
Were i work now im currently on $13.50 a week doing a 50 hour week, doing less as I haven't got a license and cant really complain now, but in the new year i have been offered training more so in the mechanical side of things within the company

I'd say $13.50 an hour, 50 hours a week; adding up to roughly 650 a week
I end up having around $750 a week in my pocket after tax

On first year sparky wages i was getting $238 for 38 hours, second year was $332, third was $450, 4th was 580.
The first year pay might be absolute shit, but i had 3 jobs so i didn't really have a problem.
hey mate yeah.. sound about right im an apprentice printer. first year i think i was on 6.70 or around about pulling home 245 a week.. it sounds like shit while you do it mate but it works out in the end trust me.. i'd take the job but make sure they start the apprenticeship Straight away as alot of bosses will **** around for the first 6 months with you on the low wages.. just watch em.. good luck mate
With the job market the way it is, a youth is hardly in a position to starting demanding employment conditions. If an employer offers a probation period to test the waters on both sides I would take it. He starts to lay down the law he could well be passed over for the next eager lad who is happy to undertake a trial period.
far out 200$ a week i thought ive got it bad i earn 301$ on like 8.20 or somthing as a first year sparky goes up to 10$ next year then 15$ 3rd and like 17$ for fourth then 28 to 35$ once im qualified
