Today's Sydney Daily Telegraph has an article about NSW learner drivers getting their Provisional licenses more easily at some motor registries than others, with country registries being generally much easier than those in Sydney. Some registries in Sydney only pass around 35-40% of learners first time, whilst Bega passes over 90% first time.
The thing that got me in the article was the supposed number of P plate applications made in NSW a year. The number claimed was 220,000.
Now, I find that large number difficult to accept. That represents approximately 3% of the whole NSW population and I find it very hard to believe that many people are trying to get their licenses each year.
But, if it is correct, it might explain why there seem to be so many red P platers running around this State these days.
yeah that sounds very high to me, i just tried to google some info came up with nothing, but then looking differently at it. Victoria had just under 49,000 VCE students this year, then also concsidering VCE drop outs etc i highly doubt NSW has x4 the amount of P platers.
Then again my numbers only include looking at year 12s and not 18 plus age group which i couldn't see being that big.
Also just reading it again, is the number of applications successfull applications or does it include second and third attemps ?

i can under stand the city v country stats if you think about it not many people in the city are aloud to drive befor there L's where as the country folk drive as soon as thay can reach the petals.
as for the high number of p platers there is more P's around from all age groups as well as immigrants
people who have lost lisences and all the rest of it so it might not be as big as 1st thought
I find it very hard to believe, That number is just way to high. And it will drop alot now that learners have to do 120hours of driving before going for there P Test in NSW. I found it bad enough with 50 hours, and the fuel cost :-O
I Dragged my feet a bit with getting my Ps cause i already got around on my Suzuki Bike. have a open bike license, and still on Ps. least i have 12 points on my bike, so i can still ride if i loose my Ps![]()

Not sure about NSW, but in Vic, the system is flawed.
If you lose your license on your P's, and the suspension period goes past your Probationary Expiry, when you get your license back, you automatically start on your full license! As my girlfriend has found out.
So although you might have x number of registered Probationary drivers, there's a good chance a percentage of them dont actually drive.
And also, keep in mind, that people who may be getting their license for the first time at like 26/27, would be on their P's too.
And migrants and late bloomers.
And that lady who failed the Test over 400 times before finally getting it at age 56. (South Korean woman, in the news a while back)
I realise that the figure would include many drivers over the age of 18 who might be immigrants etc, as well as previously disqualified drivers who had to undergo the probationary process again, and multiple applications from previous failures, but 220,000 in one year, from one State alone, seems unbelievable.
If it is correct, though, I wonder what the national total was for the year.
And again, if it's correct, no wonder P platers seem to be crawling out the woodwork every time you drive anywhere.
I Hate the Speed Limit for Learners & P Platers. I Think its a big mistake. When i was starting out on the Bike, L Plater, 80kms along 110km freeway, 30kms slower, its just dangerous. i have no idea how i was not hit from behind, i spent more time looking in the mirrors then in front lol
i know it's a high no but its only 3%. 3% sounds right

as for failure rates at metro v country ...........lets see immigrants tend to congregate in metro areas and speak less english ,does not mean the country tests are more lenient !
as for the stupid 80k speed limit for red p platers THAt is a very dangerous speed on the open road ....its more like a mobile road block ,the sooner that fact is realised and changed the safer we will all be on the roads !
