    Default Speeding Fines

This was published in Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper yesterday.
Between 2008-2009 929,709 motorists were fined for exceeding the speed limit by less than 10km/h.
The next closest was 215,482 motorists fined for exceeding the speed limit by more than 10km/h but less than 15km/h.
If this isn't revenue raising then I don't know what is.
The do gooders will say if the didn't speed than they will have nothing to worry about but the large gap between speeding 10km/h and under and 10km/h over but less than 15km/h is alarming.
This has nothing to do about safety but generating revenue for the government's coffers.

i can see this thread lasting long. if any of the people that did between 0 and 10 km/h over the limit had a good driving record, they would be able to get off that fine anyway so who cares really

For f**k sake, its not revenue raising. The speed limit is a set number, say 60. Its not "60 or a few k's over 60", yes people go over the speed limit accidentally but if you were really that concerned about getting a fine, pay more attention. I'd assume most of the 0-10kmh over would be at least 5 k's over. With most speedos set a few K's over what speed they're actually going, that means the driver would have been going at least 5-10k's over the limit.

I agree with Maxxiz. The speed limit is not 80ish, or 67 etc.

Keep your eye on the dial, set your speed alert and ensure you stick to the posted limit.

considering vic is suppose to have a zero tolerance to speeding is it really that suprising.
and how many of those people doing <10kms over were doing 8 or 9.
people don't learn, if no-one sped then there would be no reason for speed cameras etc

People always seem to be in a rush somewhere, just relax i say, change the mentality, start cruising under the speed limit, like the song goes "Low ri der.. drives a little slower" Its cool not to speed

I think just to reiterate its not revenue raising....I believe the fine was 0-10km is 134, 10-19 200ish.....
Over 45 is 12 months loss, and only 450 (for first offence). My mate only got 300 as a fine as well.
If it was revenue raising that would be closer to 1000 to milk it

I'm quite looking forward to travelling within the next six months. When i'm in France i'll be able to do 130kmh on the highways, 120kmh in Spain, and 130kmh in Italy (with some highways having a speed limit of 150kmh). Mind you apparently you have to pay fines on the spot over there.

I havn't had a speeding fine (or any fine) for something like 3 years, so i'm of the opinion, don't speed, don't pay money.

I don't care about speeding fines as such, my problem is with certain roads having a speed limit too low for the type of road it is (compared to other similar roads with higher speeds)

But that doesn't mean because i think x road 'should' be 80, but its 60, that i'm going to do 80, i'll still gladly put along at 60, and keep my hard earned to spend on myself

I think people can say all day, stick to the speed limit and you will be fine, but millions of people speed(almost).

No-one said people don't speed. The fact the government makes so much money off it is proof enough. The point it, its not revenue raising.....

Of course it is revenue raising, but who gives a ****, I think of it simply as a voluntary tax, you do the right thing you don't pay the tax, you do the wrong thing bend over and take your punishment. I wish all taxes were voluntary!

    that sums it up !
anyone that thinks the government are not in to raising revenue with speed cameras placed at the end of overtaking lanes ,converting red light cameras to speed cameras as well has rocks in their heads !
However .......dont speed and you wont get booked really simple ....however the government is also trying to reduce the speed on some country roads due to the fact they have not got the money to upgrade them .....simple fix put fine $$$ into road upgrades

Are you one of the people who think its legal to speed when overtaking? Its not. If you can't pass while doing the speed limit, you don't pass, or you break the law and take the risk. Simple really.

Commodore speedos are out by 3kph anyhow...... so at an indicated 100kph you are only doing 97. I set my cruise control to 105kph and never been done by either fixed camera or mobile unit at that speed. They won't do you for 2k's over.....

I'm not sure where this theory that the speed reading on GPS units is the gospel truth for speed readings came from?

GPS units are not 100% precise, their resolution is often out by a couple of meters, they're highly susceptible to interference, make position adjustments in software, and update relatively slowly.

With regards to your speedo, it's possible it is understating the speed if you have very worn tyres (or have changed your rim/tyre profile size), but I'd be trusting the vehicle speedo more than the GPS, they are quite well calibrated.

    +1

it makes perfect sense to collect taxes in a way that incentivizes good behaviour, rather than taxing income, which is counter productive.

is someone doing 62 in a 60 zone a major threat to society? no. but could they just do 60 and avoid paying fines? yep - i do, after years of stupidly contributing to govt revenue i eventually realised the obvious solution. scientific studies have shown that people's brains often don't develop enough to realise that until after 25

danja, considering some offences have been challenged successfully using gps logs, I would say they are fairly accurate. In fact, they are so accurate the government are trying to push transporters to go with them for monitoring more accurately drivers speeds, drive times etc. Heck, even the military use co-ordinates based on GPS details, so it can't be too inaccurate. I will stick to the government approved GPS tracking and logging system over my car speedo when challenging any fine thanks

Anyway, im off to smash some more HSV's, also going to do some 4 wheel skids, if police catch me it will be nothing but revenue raising :/

Correction not all are out by 3kph, mines out by 5kph at 100 but out only 1kph at 50, checked with gps and those speedo things on the side of the road .

I've lost the link but their was a really good article about the wipe off 5 thing and showed the actual stopping differences in the two. The difference was about 6m at 60 and 65 km, but the most interesting fact was the reaction time and how far you traveled. In both cases the car would have hit the person. As from memory the reaction time was 2 seconds meaning both cars traveled around 30m.

Anywho i'll try fine the article it was a really good read, comparing a few countries.

Ratio of Speed to Stopping Distance

Not the article i read, but shows the stopping distances in feet.

I'm for and against speedings, i rather go 5km over the limit to stay away from traffic, as my folks always said it's not going to be you who causes the crash and it's true the amount of people who don't concentrate scares me and thats my reason for goign 5km over sometimes.
