Toyota owners are unhappy about the performance of the system, calling it defective. Pedestrian lives at risk?
Dozens of owners of the current third generation Toyota Prius models have filled complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the alleged brake failures they have experienced.
The Office of Defects Investigation has at least 33 complaints that we are aware of from Prius owners alleging a problem or safety defect, often about the design or performance of the braking system, which recharges the battery when the Prius decelerates.
Some owners describe this as unintended acceleration, but a review of the complaints by TheDetroitBureau.com leads me to think that this is an issue about how thebraking system is calibrated. Whether this is a safety related defect is ultimately up to NHTSA to decide. The safety agency is authorized to order manufacturers to recall and repair vehicles when ODI investigations indicate that they contain serious safety defects in their design, construction, orperformance.
For Toyota, it is another owner satisfaction or quality issue, at a minimum, coming from its most advanced technology vehicle at a time when Toyota is under attack for its handling of safety matters.
Braking performance issues?
In the case of the Prius brakes, it appears that the transition from regenerative braking to hydraulic braking is not transparent to drivers. Under certain conditions, the driver needs to press harder on the brake pedal to obtain the same stoppingperformance the regenerative system working in conjunction with the hydraulic brakes initially provides. Drivers are clearly upset by longer than expected stopping distances.

i drive prius's all the time at work and never have a problem?
Wow!
I nearly got run over by a Prius in the Work carpark this morning.
I was msging and som guy starting reversing out. I didnt hear it, obviously, but imagine if his brakes weren't working....lawsuit....
americans complain about everything, 'sudden acceleration' has a habit of happening to old drivers for some reason.
theyre just lucky their floormats didnt get caught on the pedals or people would be dying everywhere. bloody americans. buy a real car next time

Brake performance hehe. Im sure its still better then VR braking lol, when i jump into the vx i use the same force and go through the screen lol.
and might be people trading in there V8s as they cannot afford to run them any more and expect V8 speed lol
Every Prius I drive at work smells like cat piss. Majority of the owners are kinda weird aswell lol
Ahhh Americans, I had one come into work and complain that their light switch wasn't working in their room (hotel for those playing at home) and they want a full refund as his family is in danger due to the light not working (common problem in hotels of vampires and demons..... lighting curbs this.......), anyway long story short he was trying to use the power point switch (on the other side of the room).... best part was he said we should move the light switch as it was a stupid place to have it.....
i drove a Prius a couple of years ago... would have been the first gen models when we learned about the hazards of hybrids in MVA's.... i was surprised at how well it went.

- TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.
I hate the shit out of these hybrid cars, esp the prius. in an automotive exam in year 12 i was asked what the advantages and disadvantages were of hybrid cars and in my answer i stated as a disadvantage that hybrid cars are dodgy and just not cool and i got half a mark lol.
this thread is a defect.
the funny thing is... the processes it takes to make and then dismantle a hybrid creates a far larger "carbon footprint" ( i farking HATE that term!) than a Hummer..... it's all hype.
