Guys,
i am thinking of taking advantage of the govt offer to subsidise insulation. have any of you got insulation in your roof cavity, and did it make any noticable difference after you put it in?

huge difference man!
if you've had little or none, it's like leaving a window open- thats how much difference!
It's for free so you have nothing to loose..
I can't say a huge difference to be honest with this Summer heat.
See when Winter comes around as my house is like a fridge in Winter.
Noticed a difference when we had our townhouse done, aircon doesnt work as much, although not sure if thats because of the new 35kw compressor or not lol.

i booked it for 23/1/10. i will soon find out. i gotta pay $375 on top of the subsidy, but if it helps it will be worth it.

Did mine 2 weeks ago,
Noticed a difference instantly, I have 2 whirly's on the roof as well, but the house was cool, didn't run the Aircon at all, normally it would have been cranking all day :-)))
I did mine myself, as I had the Batt's already........

You are probably paying the extra $375 because the insulation installers are rorting like hell and are trying to get the full $1600 (I think) as previously available. I bet a typical roof insulation job didn't cost $1600 before the rebate.
It will make a difference - I used to rent a house (before I bought one with insulation + aircon) without any insulation or aircon and it was just as hot inside the house as outside during summer, and in winter my bedroom used to get down to 11 degrees in the morning, in Brisbane!

My olds got it done, their house is an old queenslander with 11 foot ceilings, and its made a huge difference. If you shut the house up in the morning it stays a good ten degrees cooler inside.
Four commodores and counting.
Half of our house is ur standard ceiling space house, the other is cathedral ceiling.
We put insulation where we could, leaving the cathedral part without.
In summer the insulated half stays coolish, the other is sweltering hot!
Then we got ducted aircon, but it works far better in the insulated half
I've had up to 9 deg C difference inside the house during the colder months of winter & similar results on the really hot days
I got the spray in cellulose style insulation.
I was skeptical about how effective it would be, but after having it installed and seeing the results - I highly recommend it
If you are planning on putting in downlights, go for the wool blanket type of insulation instead of the spray in stuff.
I recently had 57 downlights installed in my house and my electrician breathed a sigh of relief when he saw I had wool/rockwool blankets. If I had the spray on stuff I would have had to purchase an additional 57 insulation hoods. Not cheap!
No noticeable difference. Just be very careful with installers. Unfortunately anyone can become an "insulation installer" overnight.
I had an extremely bad job done at my house. about half of my heat/cooling ducts have been crushed, alarm cables were broken in the roof and downlights were pushed out of the ceilings.
we had a large tree that shaded the whole house cut down in winter a few years ago.
i then insulated the ceiling before the next summer so didn't really notice much difference. (i had to pay for it so was pissed off when the government started paying for it) except that the air con seems to work better and there is one part of the ceiling i haven't yet done which appears to be hotter in that area than the rest of the house.
so i guess it must work
as everyone else has stated YES it is worth getting done
BUT did you know that this insulation bonus has really turned in to a money maker for .......the CHINESE as i am told even the bradford batts are now being made there to keep up with demand
so much for our local economy !
I actually make the insulation at Bradford ,yes it makes a noticeable difference nothing extroardinary, however none of Bradford imports are from china we recently exported to USA they are now returning our old stock numbers, definately ask how much more it would cost for4.1 batts they are a lot better... hope this helps
How hard is it to install the batts into the ceiling??
When I was helping to renovate the old folks home, installing the batts into the wall was dead easy. Just use a knife to cut the batts to size to fit inside the walls, push the batts into place, then install the plasterboard over the top. Job done.
To the orignal question: Yes, batts do make a notable difference! Like others have said, during the morning of a hot day, close up all windows, and shut all blinds. Doing this, you'll find the temp inside is 6-10 degrees cooler then outside (This is for a brick veneer house). To be honest, I don't bother using the aircon during the day; only when the outside temp drops and the inside temp rises I turn on the aircon.
