I did it a couple of years ago .... go to the motor registrary and apply for a permit ....
I drove from cairns to Newcastle..... its kind of fun cause your driving a car with no plates, so you can count the times the highway patrol whip a u-turn and come after you.

Present your paperwork from the glovebox and all is good
