hey guys. i just finished yea 12 successfully with and enter score of 52.95
i applied for teaching prep to 12 and physical education teaching primary.
i got into the course but i dont know if i want to do it.
my step dad is a sparky in a factory so he knows all other tradies and can get me some work experiance or pre apprenticeships with some other tradies. im unsure what to do. my course at uni is for 4 years. i have also been offered an apprenticeship in printing, the guy knows my step dad and is willing to take me on. im very confused in what to do. i like the idea of teaching but i dont think i can handle another 4 years of school and being flat broke. neeed some help lol

Go with something you enjoy, if you find a trade you enjoy, go for it. A lot of tradies are very sought after, however a lot of people tend to get into a trade and despise it years down the track.

If it were me I would take the printing apprenticeship in a heartbeat, my hubby is a printer is takes home more than twice the average teachers wage. I think to be a teacher it really has to be something you want to do because you will have a lot of shit and little shits to deal with. I started uni doing teaching but I never finished because my heart never was in it. You can always defer uni and try something else and if that something else isn't for you go and start your uni course in 6 months time.

yeah thats what im leaning towards atm.
im really not sure about uni all together coz im not set on anything and if i start something and dont like it i will be stuck with a fair amount of debt.

I don't think a trade job would be most suited for you. only reason I say this is because.. you had decided to want to do teaching, which is indoors. Your first choice is usually the best choice I've found out. Have you done some work experience?

I wanted to become a sparky, did some work experience, thought it was too hot to be working outside etc. and now I'm back to doing double major in finance and accounting. Good old office life aircon wen its hot, heater wen its cold, and internet when you get bored. o. don't forget the hot secretaries etc, gives ya something to look at other than same sex tradies haha.

About money, I'm doing uni part time. Last year worked 3days and 2days uni. Earned ~$500 in pocket, plus you could work nightfill or a saturday.

This year I'm going to do external study and work full-time. I decided some extra cash will help cause we've just got a home loan, actually excited atm, our slab just went down!!

It is possible to go to uni and work still.

If you haven't done work experience, get some, and then make your choice. Mine was rather easy, prefered in doors and a computer, with potential to earn $100k+.

Ah k, another one of those sports science people :P lol. I know too many of those. One of my friends just got in it, was saying that first semester they play tennis and second some other sport :P it sounds like a pretty easy course. But I think theres going to be heaps of these teachers floating around soon. atm it's a big thing and everyone wants to do it.

4yr course, tink 3years sports stuff and 1yr teaching I think she was saying.

yeah i didnt do sports science or nothing like that. was like my 4th preferance behind personal training and teaching.
with the printing apprenticeship ill be doing shift work. my step dad recons i might be able to do a pt course as well. which is something id like to do.

The above statement it proof you have no ****ing idea what you actually want to do with your life / career. It's not a bad thing however, when I was your age I had no idea either!

You best bet is to defer uni, try and do a bit of experience here and there doing things you think you may enjoy. Once you find something you really like - push towards that.


Prime example is myself I guess...
In highschool all I wanted to be was a mechanic, bugger apprenticeships in the area that year made it quiet difficult to get one, dispite having a pre-apprenticeship course. My other alternative was to go to uni and study IT of all things, after completing my degree I decided that wasn't for me.

Eventually I found a job working in Construction / Project Management which I really enjoyed, 4.5 years later I am looking at undertaking my Masters in Project Management and still love doing what I do. Not to mention, my earning potential in this sector is much higher then a mechanic!


Take your time to try things out, you will spend the next 40odd years (LE$$ if your lucky) working on your career you might as well do something you like.

I've been in the printing industry for 16 odd years, and love it. There are so many different types of printing, screen, digital, photographic, offset, litho, sublimation. And then you have other facets associated with it, finishing, fabrication, binding. So much variety.

I'd highly recommend it, but i am bias too....

Very generalised, i know, but tradies like to get out and get things done, and have a sence of pride in completing a job. Generally jobs where you need a degree, you dont often get to work with your hands, often more with people and computers.

Lol. I see it as. If you like getting scorched in the sun and don't mind interacting with guys all day then a tradie is the way. If you prefer to surf the net (read JC forums), perve on hotties and be in a aircon'd room - an office job works well.

If you like fixing/building something by hand - a trade. If you rather use your charisma and your brain (I dont mean tradies dont have a brain lol .. eeks tat came out wrong lol) - get an office job.

Both have ups and downs, you just gotta figure out what you want, what you like. I did work experience as car audio installer... cause I love sound systems, but hell... it's a pretty shitty job. It's awesome doing your own stereo but doing it all day every day is pretty boring.

fyi, he wouldn't be working in the sun, he would be working in a factory and most modern factories are airconditioned. Printing is not an overly labour intensive job and he would still get plenty of downtime to stuff around on the net and socialise. I'd strongly suggest the op does some work experience to get an idea what he likes.

ok guys. i defered from uni 2day untill next year. im gonna give the printing thing a go im accually excited about it which is much more enthusiasim than any other option that has popped up. if i dont like where im heading in 12 months time ill go to uni. but i think i might like this printing job

beat me to is, i was goona sugest you defer uni for a year, and do some work experiance, give a few different trades a crack. printing, sparky, what ever tickles ya bits. take the time to make the right choice, and do it right the first time.

Design open cut and underground mines from my office in the city, then fly out to the mine site and make sure everything is going to plan.

Perfect mix of office work and hands on (as in operating machinery) work.

It took 7 years of fulltime study and another 1.5 years part-time, but it got me the sweet office job, otherwise I would be living in a country shit hole town.

A university degree doesn't have to mean a life sentence in an office.

I hope so. I finished uni in 2008 (elec eng), and landed an office job working as a consultant. I'm hating office work, and hopefully will be working in a more hands-on job this coming year.

+100. Go out and do a couple of trades that come your way. If you have a real passion for one, pursue it, otherwise, go to uni, drink plenty of beer and talk to the sweet ladies
