Ok today i came home for my lunch break and i get this phonecall from some indian sounding bloke, normally I just hang up on anyone who sounds like this after about 5 seconds. now this bloke was asking if i was the main user of my computer which i am and he starts goin on about people having problems with viruses and internet crashing on their computers and he wanted me to go through some stuff on my computer to make sure im not having any problems. Now this did sound a little suss as ive never had anyone ring me up like this before but i went along with it for a bit, so he gets me to type "eventvwr" in Run which brought me to some event viewer which i've never been in before, then he tells me to go into some windows log thing and tell him how many error things are showing up. Now at this point i was like yeah i gotta go back to work so i hung up and he says he was gonna call back later.
Just wondering if something similar like this has happened to anyone else, i also went into Retravision today so i asked them if they have heard anything like this before and the said some woman called them as something similar happened to her where they were talking about viruses and they wanted her to go on the internet so they could do some stuff to help her and asking about bank details or something, now im not dumb enough to just go giving out bank details, so just wondering what everyone else thinks.
Haha i'd love to get one of those calls, would be so funny, mainly because i would ask him to check his computer for viruses and then recommend him to buy one of our software LOL.
But no i never got those types of calls before. Just ignore them, like i do, if there is a delay of 2 seconds and then someone indian starts talking i hang up (Hmmm can be a problem though if one of my step Dads family from Perth calls up for a chat since they are indian o.O ).
Yes it is suss. Anybody who is ringing you, who doesn't know you, or anything about you, or anything about your PC, is up to something. We had something similar from someone claiming to be from Microsoft's trouble resolution centre group in melbourne. The fact that we had no issues, or even error reports etc, meant nothing. 2 days later we got another call from some other person claiming the same thing.
yeah normally if someone rings and takes 2 seconds to reply i hang up straight away but my dad answered the phone then handed it to me lol i did tell the bloke i havnt had any problems but he still kept goin , if he calls back then yeah im just gonna ignore him
lol hell suss, next he will be ringing to check your credit card is in working order...

Or you could mess with him and go "Oh my god thank goodness you rang I am infested with virii what to do?"
I had a call a few weeks back from someone who was using an Arnold Schwarzenegger sound board... does that count as weird? lol
Hi mate I've had this call, the first time when he was asking me if my computer was running slow I said, nah it's running perrfect mate and he was like no we have all the information we are microsoft, your computer is running slow it has a virus rarararar. And he told me to go to the computer and type some stuff, I wasn't going to but anyway I had to remind him I have a phone with a cord and can't go anywhere near itso he just hung up. Then I decided if I ever get this one again I'll tell him I'm running linux to see what he says...... since he has all my information. Anyway a few months later I get another Indian called Bob/John/Fred insert short easy English name here and ai went along with it for a while then he goes now push the start button and I go I can't I have linux and he goes eeeeeRGGGG *hangup* (owned). I assume they send you to a link to give you some king of remote access trojan and try steal some money. Anyway I'm stressed with sick animal to look after so I'm going again but that's how it is ^ big scam

Microsoft will not call you unless you give them your details. If you give them your details, you'll recieve a call within 48 hours. Other than you submitting your details on a form on Microsoft's website they dont collect personal data from your computer to be able to pinpoint who you are and what your number is!
But i must agree Linux FTW. I dont even run GUI Linux :P Like to see me click ANYTHING on it :P
Yeah should have posted a warning you may mess with a few people on this forum. I'm sure you care.![]()

I have long since disabled event viewer on my computer along with error reporting, netbios, telnet, remote access and many more, you can safely stiff the ones I mentioned ,CONTROL PANEL>ADMIN TOOLS> RIGHT CLICK>STOP> DISABLE.
Yea sounds bogus, most probably some dodgey marketing ploy than a hacker, a hacker would not phone you...but still, who knows, trust noone with your personal stuff these days?
BTW. did you see the guy the other night on the tele got stiffed for $80,000.00 cash, removed from his bank, true story, they stole his identification through the net and used it to access his bank.,,,tell em nothing
Also while I am on a roll>> Rule number 1 do not ever store sensitive details on your computer.
Only time I reveal details is netbanking (still risky) and it uses a secure socket layer encrypted connection.
I keep the passwords and details in my head and my file cabinet.
Cheers

Gotta love all the indian phone calls hey?
But yeah probably trying to tell you you have a virus in order for you to purchase some sort of virus scanner from then, doubt it would have been a hacker.. but still possible...
I hope they ring me so i can try the following...
"My computer is running perfect."
"We are at microsoft and we can see it has a virus."
"I am Bill Gates. You're fired. Goodbye."
*hangs up*
id much rather just do what he says (to a point) and lie about stuff he can use, i.e. IP address etc, just to see what his deal was.
plus it means it costs whoever just that little bit more $$ for no sale.
