WEBSITES were shut down, public servants received threatening phone calls and pornography was plastered across Kevin Rudd's home page in a major cyber protest against government plans to filter the internet.
The government's Cyber Security Operations Centre discovered the attack was coming on February 5 but was unable to stop the parliament house website going offline and Prime Minister Rudd's site becoming home to "Operation Titstorm".
Internet protest group Anonymous, known for its regular attacks on Scientology websites, was behind the actions which were led by a so-called denial of service charge on www.aph.gov.au.
Just after 8am (AEDT) on Wednesday morning the parliament's website was hit by 7.5 million requests for communication per second, Parliamentary Services Secretary Alan Thompson told AAP.
"We had some advice in the lead-up to today there was going to be some cyber attack," Mr Thompson said.
Senior staff inside the department also had their emails spammed "in spectacular ways".
High ranking public servants were telephoned as part of the attack.
"Aggressive but anonymous phone calls are being made to the offices of various parliament house executives," an internal parliamentary services email obtained by AAP said.
While the initial attack was stopped about 9am (AEDT), further attacks continued throughout the day.
The proposed internet filter would crack down on pornography.
The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy's website also experienced a degraded service, a spokesman from the Attorney-General's Department said.
The spokesman said government agencies identified as potential targets by the group had been briefed on the threat, and were provided with strategies to help stop a hacking attempt.
At 1.30pm (AEDT) the spokesman said the Australian Parliament House website was back online, however, at 2.10pm (AEDT) it was once again inaccessible.
Parliament House's fax system was also hit with spam.
Defence Minister John Faulkner said the Cyber Security Operations Centre remained on watch.
"As inquiries are ongoing it would be inappropriate for me to comment further," Senator Faulkner's spokesman said.

Operation Titstorm (OT) is a phenomenon that occurred beginning February 10/10. Titstorm as it may be referred to in the context of operations, is a portmanteau of Tits and Shitstorm.
We all know that Australia is a country that is very strict on censorship. Video games, websites and other media forms are censored or even banned. This kind of oppression has occasionally turned its citizens crazy such as Joseph Fritzl. Recently, the Australian Government proposed a banning of pornography (real or drawn) that depicts women with small breasts and female ejaculation. This, for instance, would make rule 34 on Taylor Swift and Keira Knightley illegal. Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, then began to push for a bill which would put in place mandatory ISP filtering for all of Australia, based on a "blacklist" of websites created by the government. The blacklist was leaked, and it included several of the *chans.
The invasion started when a tripfag named Pulser made this post thus beginning Operation Titstorm. Another Anon famously replied, "the tripfag is right." A thread was then created and the original post soon became copypasta. An IRC channel was formed, resources were gathered, and a full-scale raid began being planned. The raid then evolved into a longterm, largescale undertaking by Anonymous known as Project: Internet Freedom.

Good for a giggle, but to be honest it's probably harmed the legitimate efforts to get any meaningful improvement to the clean feed situation. Now they're just going to say the opponents are a bunch of children and it's going to be even harder to get Conroy to pay any attention.

Its about as bright as a bunch of people doing burnouts out the front of town hall protesting hoon laws.

If Conroy is crazy enough to call everyone that opposes his "clean feed"(yeah right!) paedophiles, I don't know that he's smart enough to listen to anything. I think we'll get it no matter what. Should ban christians from politics, too stupid and blinded by ideology to be allowed to make decisions for others.
There's just too many ways around a http filter for it to have any effect at all one anyone who wants to look at porn stars with little boobies or anything else.
If the government wants a censorship on the internet then maybe they should start their own web provider, so that people are able to choose if they want their interwebs censored. Don't impose their views on everyone else.
Should be a petition or something, or someone run for government to stop this, i vote myself![]()

Apparently a queensland tour operator and a dentist managed to find themselves onto the 'blacklist'. So before it's even been implemented it already has bad entries in it. How many more perfectly fine website will end up being placed on the blacklist incorrectly?
Also as online gambling is illegal all the online poker sites and such are on the list, even betfair who I should mention won an award from the Queen not long ago have found themselves on the list.
As a hosting provider I can be fined i believe up to $10000 per day for hosting a website placed on the blacklist. Mind you the government can't actually tell me which website that may be as that isn't allowed to be disclosed to the public. Someone explain to me the logic in that.
The government would struggle to have any kind of chance to block the style of attack on them. A similar style of attack brought down twitter a few months ago and crippled facebook for a couple of days. I dare say facebook would be investing a lot more money into the security and resilience of their web servers than what our government would.
