I had an email yesterday claiming my paypal needed updating and to give them my personal details looked legit , until my spyware informed me that it came from an unknown sender friggin thieves everywhere. So the only advice i can offer to "try" and prevent it happening again is to at least get some good internet security. I use trend micro internet security if any help. Hope all ends up well for your mum.
A fool and his money are soon parted. NEVER do anything online like this, especially those ****tards paypal (if anything i'd say i'd rather deal with the scammers than the real paypal).

If you ever get anything from PayPal asking to "update info", don't click on the URL provided, you go straight to your personal PayPal site and look into it from there. Get in contact with them yourself and ask the question.
I was getting the same thing from my Bank, asking me to update, so i rung my bank and asked the question and they gave me an email address to forward that email to as it was a scam, and they reckon the email i got was one of the more sophisticated ones.
There are email addresses to send the emails to, (ie: fraud squad and the like) if you get anything from anyone asking to "update details", ignore it and get in contact with that person/company direct....then you can go from there.
DON'T EVER CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAILS FROM COMPAINES EVEN PEOPLE YOU TRUST AS FRIENDS AS COMPUTERS CAN BE HACKED SPECIFICALLY FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE........majority of the time those links will download deadly viruses onto your hard drive and you've lost your computer. Always triple check with your friends first.....just keep yourself safe.

yeah my mum is usually internet smart, i had a look at the scam page my self it looked very legit
but everything was a .jpg file except the login and the url was a .ru
but i would Imagen that the normal "internetz" user would be fooled because who wants to click anything else if you get told "you have to update your details"
