Default Ideas for 5 year old birthday present

    Hi guys,

I need to buy a 5 year old b/day present for a girl. I need to buy it by 4pm today (i've left it a little late i know). I'm happy to spend a few hundred dollars. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Adam

thats a lot for a 5yr old. Dolls/babies are usually a stereotypically good choice.

She's not your typical girl. For Christmas i got her a remote control car (like this one http://www.rc-xpress.com/catalog/ima...-drift_001.jpg).

She's not really into dolls and stuff. I'd rather get her something she can keep than toys too. She already has a bike so that ideas out.

    Any more suggestions?

She has a DS already . I'm thinking of some wii or playstation games but i don't want to encourage sitting in front of the TV too much.

Sounds like a spoilt little brat already.

Why the hell you need to spend a few hundred dollars on a present is beyond me. Where are the old fashioned values, as in being the thought that counts?

Buy her a book and stimulate her brain.

I said i was happy to spend a few hundred, not that i want too. Children don't understand the concept of money and wouldn't know the difference between me spending $60 on them or $200. I just want a good present she'll like. Alternatively, a main present and lots of little things.

    Thanks again.

A camera! Encourage to get out and about and take pics of nature and people and what not. Nintendo's and the like has her sitting in front of the tv .

At 5, she is perfect for some of these kiddy digital cameras... especially if she's already got the hang of using a DS. Plus it's a present that will last AND be useful. And as a bonus, parents will appreciate it (quiet toy, and actually something useful that they could enjoy as well). They are shock and water proof, so she can take to beach or even step on it and it'll be fine! Good thing you have a little extra to spend- because the better ones are about $150-200. You can get crappy ones for like $50-75, but stay away from them.

look here: Olympus Australia | Digital Cameras | Digital SLR | Digital Lenses | xD Cards - Mju Tough 3000 details

shock proof, water proof, snow proof, shake proof... $200.
    (and its red.... very important)

bought from these guys before, very reliable.

or the new one.... the MJU 3000 is nice. not sure on price though.

you can put 100Kg on them, drop them from 2m, and then take it up to 10m in water. obviously she's not going scuba diving, but because its got a higher water proof rating (and not just splash proof), jumping in a pool with it or at the beach isnt going to kill it because of the sudden pressure change.

1Gb internal memory and a HD movie mode, and you're set. only thing is because its so new you may not be able to find it today.

do a google search on kids cameras. a few review sites pop up. just stay away from the cheapies. I made that mistake... complete waste of money. they arent cameras- they are toys. shes 5, not 2 or 3, and the fisher price ones are too 'kiddy' for her.

Too late to get by 4pm tday (unless theres a place local to you) but get her an R5 for the DS. Then you can dl whatever games she wants and store them all on that unit so she doesn't have to change the card thingy. There about $100 i think......

UFO, the only place i can find the tough 3000 is ryda. I live in Melbourne and want something local. The only cameras i can find are MJU 6000/6010 for about $250/$300. There is the MJU 8000 but that's a bit expensive. How do you find the photo quality on yours? Apparently the photo quality of the 6000/6010 isn't great. Thanks again.

depends on what you mean by 'great', mate.

i think image quality on all these little point and shoot ones are crap, but then I'm basing it on my 5D digital slr.

for a 5yo, image quality takes a back seat to durability imo.

cnet review on the 6000 is pretty good.
Olympus Mju Tough 6000 Review - Digital Compact Cameras

dont concern yourself with image quality of the 6000. it certainly wouldnt be 'crap'... but would be good enough for what you are buying it for.
more expensive though... you sure you want to spend that much?

The 6000 is $250 at JB. From what i've seen, the 3000 is more. Are there cheaper ones?

Buying a 5yo girl a camera isn't a good idea in my opinion.
