hey all, thought i'd share a little story, it involves a major stuff up when my last car was sold late last year.
basically it was sold with no records kept, and only a mobile number of the guy who bought it. and of course- i ended up with the 1% of people who never do the right thing on the road- he drove around in the car in my name for about 2 months, and in that time, racked up a number of charges including:
speeding TWICE in two days
parking in a taxi zone in the city
and something involving a road rage incident with the car (no real details were given to me)
ALL IN MY NAME.
basically i spent 4 weeks calling every group and organisation to try and get some help, with no way of getting access of a name and address (yes i called him... he even gave me false details lol), i ended up using a copy of a disposal notice and a work time sheet to prove i wasnt the driver.
and as of... 10 minutes ago i now have notice that all charges will go to him now
so just a warning: dont trust everyone you meet lol, its pretty obvious, but even the slightest slip up can create a nightmare. i'll make sure to get every detail if i ever sell the car i have now in the future lol
so anyone selling a car for the first time: get all the forms signed, dated, even get a reciept written up for him/her to sign and date to keep all bases covered.

its your fault.
you shouldve got a copy of the licence etc.. and a signed receipt from selling the car to who ever.
good to know that its all getting forwarded to him now.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
YES YES
i'll say this now before i get the same reply over and over again:
--I KNOW WHAT I DID WAS WRONG, AND IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. YES I STUFFED UP, BUT PART OF THE FAULT ALSO LIES WITH THE OTHER GUY WHO CHOSE TO BREAK THE LAW KNNOWING IT WASNT IN HIS NAME--
i'm just sharing the story here, so people who are selling a car for the first time, will know what to do, so they wont get caught out with the same type of buyer.

Your not the only one to do this. I stupidly sold my VX and allowed the lady time to do the transfer, she ended up running a red light and we copped the fine, she had sold the car and moved house by the time we got the fine in the mail.
Lucky its all sorted now, lesson learnt.

Once you hand in the notice of disposel isn't that ment to help with this kinda situation? Like once its handed in the cars not in your name? (NSW anyway..)
i woulda called the guy, made him aware of the situation, if he had of gave me false info after that. i would of reported the car stolen, gave the cops a lead where to find it. get my old car back, pay the fines and come out ontop

and i sold a car to some one and got fines like u he run red lights and all got that sorted my partner rang some place n got his detales lol.
i will never sell a car without getting detales agane and wen i sell my next car thinking of going down and making them change rego then.
you just cant trust some ppl to do the rite thing now days
if it is still registered to you? have you thought about reporting it stolen? when the police find it, the guy will say he bought it, its his, admitting guilt. if he doesnt, take the car, sell it and pay the fines? just a thought
dad sold his wagon last year, the guy had no licence, so his sister was driving it home, we wrote up a letter saying it had changed hands that day, had her sign it.
a month later, whaddayaknow!! speeding fine in the mail, through eastlink. dad filled out a stat dec saying he wasnt in possesion of the car, along with a photocopy of the letter they signed, sent it off, havent heard anything since.
theres so many dishonest people in the world today, it pays to protect your own ass before others
Jeez its a bit rough, but there are morons everywhere.
Short of going with him to the registry on the day of sale there isn't much you can do.
I reckon even if you did notify the registry straight away, you would still have been sent the fines and had to put up with the bullshit of explaining it to them.
yeah, the guy even went as far as changing the date the car was sold on the form- the council before said, when he finally transferred the car over it was re written to be sold on the 19th of feb- it was originally sold on the 28th of december :P
i snuck in first and put in a disposal notice with my signature on it while it was in MY name, to say i disposed of the vehicle on the 28th, which saved me from a tonne of headache

Do what hak said, have the new owner sign a letter. I have with all the cars i've sold (bar one). Signed letter, and their drivers license number with that letter. Never had any speeding fine isues (and i would assume, never will with this setup)

Four commodores and counting.
Its quite common to 'run out' the rego already on the car before transferring (in Sa anyway). As i pointed out, this is illegal is its not transferred within 30 days, but plenty of people do it (most sellers don't put a sale date on, rather let the buyer do it, which is how this thread probably started)

But with the speeding fines, either it's by a camera (couldn't you ask for the photo, and you could prove it wasn't you) or by a cop (they ask for licence and then they'll know it wasn't you).
