I've always been worried about the same thing happening, but the fact that they actually told you about wht their plans were, it's like they were bored for the night and just wanted to stir......if they really wanted to do it they would have and you'd probably be typing this from a pencil out of your nose.
If something like that happens again, tell your mate in the car to ring the cops right there and then, and keep driving around with them following you, and get the cops to pull them over straight away. Might not work, but at least you can give the details over the phone and don't have to worry about taking your eyes off the road.
What a shame you now feel like you have to change your car just to feel safe...........
