Default Just got flashed. Speed cameras cover 4 lanes?

    Hi Guys,

I was driving down bell street tonight and got flashed by a parked car that was on the other side of the road. I was in the far left lane and the car was in the far right lane (on the other side of the road facing the other direction). All up there were 4 lanes. I wasn't aware the speed cameras covered 4 lanes, especially for cars traveling in the opposite direction.

Anyway, i was driving on pretty much 60 (needle was on upper side of 60) so I'm hoping the officer who books me wipes of 3km/h so i get away with it. My first speeding offense and definitely wasn't deliberate

Yeah, possibly. I just slow down way under the speed limit if I have a speedcamera in my sight. Even if its a fixed one facing the other way for some reason I always slow down lol.

I usually do this too just in case my speedo is slightly out (i've never checked it). I didn't see this one though as it was dark... i couldn't even make out what type of car it was.

THAT is a bit ****ed, how possibly can you always maintain it on EXACTLY the limit, 1 KM over the limit is a bit ****ed up. You can't even tell the difference man. I know a while back years ago, my mates mum got a fine for going over 1KM, she got let off after chucking a tantrum. She was a bit fried though...anyhow. Point being, if you speed 10 and over yeah ok no problems, but for shit that equats to 2-3KM's MEH.....

what are you talking about? there is a 3km/h buffer for speeding. this means that you need to be doing 64km/h in a 60 zone to get busted. yes the fine is for 61km/h but the vehicle was actually travelling 64km/h. if your actual speed (or should i say detected speed) is 61km/h in a 60 zone then you won't get fined.

yeh they do..i got done across 4 lanes of traffic and a medium (concrete) strip..i was going opposite way in far left lane and landcruiser was parked on the side of the road. 100 bucks and 1 point because it was just over and they had to mega zoom for my number plate and de-pixelate the picture..

This is why your better off doing 10+ over the limit. fines are no bigger, plus at least doing 10 over it is worth being fined for.

Not here, they recently adjusted the system so 1-10km/h over is 1 point and about $90, 11-20km/h over is 3 points and about $190.

So do 9 over everywhere, my point stands, if your going to speed, may as well make it worth while

I don’t know how cops can legally do this being as all cars Speedo’s are out by at least 2-3kmh from factory some new cars can be 7+kmh out be it faster or slower than the posted speed.

My 1999 Honda accord 2.3 Vtec wagon (i cant afford to purchase a commodore at the moment) at 50kmh is actually running 6kmh slower than the posted speedo speed but at 100kmh it is 2kmh faster on the stock factory tire size.

Here in NZ there is an up to 9kmh leeway on the open road but there is 0 tolerance for speeding near or outside schools.

In Australia, the ADRs state that speedos can be 10% ove-reading, but cannot under-read at all. If your car is roadworthy, it is not a problem.

I am pretty sure the current ADR allows a tolerance of +/- 10% in speedo accuracy.

That will change as soon as we go to Euro compliance.

But if your speedo is less accurate than the limits on the cops tolerance - i reckon you'd have a leg to stand on in court.

That might be the same spot i was done. It's a hill and the operator sits on the slope just to catch cars not riding their brakes down it.

If that's the current ADR, it must have come in in the past month or two. I read the ADR regarding it a couple of months ago, it states that there is a tolerance for over-reading, but absolutely zero leighway for under-reading, specifically to take the element of doubt about speeding fines out, I guess lol.

May as well go 12 then, seeing as how they knock 3km/h off anyway

    Blatant revenue raising.
I have hoons on a daily basis going thru my street doing 80-100 klm/h in a 50 zone.
The police/government are not too interested in them but go after the average Joe who occasionally happens to creep over 60k's.
You see they deliberately set up their cameras in high traffic volume areas to maximize the governments coffers/profits.
