Parents hire armed cops to keep party teens in line | News.com.au
--
I have mixed feelings. Initially when I read the headline I thought it was sad for kids who can't let their hair down at a party. I remember as a teenager parties were the place you had a few under age drinks and/or get a bit naughty with a person you had a crush on. I am sure with a cop or two at a party the under age drinking wouldn't happen.
Then I thought about the other side of the coin, something that rarely happened years ago, the gate crashers. Having security on hand to prevent them would be a good idea, but if I were a parent who was considering Police or Security, I would ask they remain outside at all times, just to stop gate crashers.
cops for hire?....... so cops are still trying to increase there revenue stream............... instead of catching real crims.

Im a teenager and I think this is a great idea. Some of the things I have seen at parties are lucrative.. Fights being the main one, Ive seen people getting hit in the head with carjacks, trolley poles, bottles and others.. Gatecrashers are also a real pain in the ass, coming just to start fights and steal things (happened at a party of mine, never again though).
Good thining by the parents.
Whats wrong with the cops getting some money, its only about $40/hour to the Police rest is pay to officer. Wouldn't it be nice if the police could afford all the equipment they need. Here in QLD most cop cars don't even have a damn terminal in them!
And they aren't wasting their time doing this instead of 'catching real crims', this is done on the officers off-duty time.

you will find that these cops are off duty and doing it for the extra cash
Cops being cops while off duty...
Similar to Lewis Hamilton being a hoon on the street?..
Im just saying

so then he's not actually a cop, he's private security. the OP stated a "police officer", one could summise that this refers to a "on duty" officer. what cops do or don't have really isn't my concern. cops catching crims is. a on duty police officer at a party doing "security" is a complete waste of time working on the basis that something "may" happen at said party.
if cops need to work a 2nd job to make a decent living it says a lot about the police force. but i'm sure it's not that bad really

Well I wouldn't really call them private security. I don't know of any private security companies that can officially arrest you (no referring to civil arrest) and give you on-the-spot fines.
I much prefer cops doing these 'specials' as their called, to do a birthday party. That way if crap does happen, if won't take a government paid officer off the street. Instead the parent will be 'paying' to get this sorted. Police won't take a few hours off their rostered shift to stand around a party.
And yeah I know a few cops who basically rely on these 'specials' and its higher rate of pay to just get by on a week-to-week basis. Police work is shit pay, especially for the massive amount of hard work they do.

..perhaps 'ludicrous'?
No they are not private security, they are still police, user pays have been around a while now. most of the police at footy games etc are all user pay events, ie. off duty police on rest days.
