Cheering crowd protects hoon from police - Local News - News - General - The Border Mail
A DRINK-driver was cheered on by a crowd of about 200 people as he allegedly performed a burn-out just north of Albury on Saturday.
The rowdy onlookers then stood in the way of police after the car, a 1965 Chrysler sedan, took off.
Insp Tony Moodie, of Albury police, was yesterday appalled by the behaviour of the people involved, who were believed to have been part of the weekend’s Chryslers on the Murray event.
“The disturbing thing about this incident is the amount of people standing with their family without a care in the world, in close proximity to a man, cheering him on when he was allegedly intoxicated, didn’t have a current licence and did not have proper control of his vehicle doing the burn-out,” he said.
“What is even worse is that when police tried to apprehend the driver, a large portion of the crowd turned on police, blocking their leaving and allowing the driver to get away.
“Some of those people can think themselves lucky that they themselves are not facing court.”
Adrian Froon, 23, of Moama, faced Albury court yesterday charged with dangerous driving, mid-range drink-driving, driving while disqualified, aggravated burn-out, negligent driving and disobey a police direction.
Police told the court Froon was seen doing the burn-out on Burma Road, in front of the Ettamogah Pub, about 4.40pm on Saturday.
The burn-out lasted for about 30 seconds, producing a large amount of smoke.
Police approached the driver but he sped off through the crowd.
Several people then stood in front of the police car as it attempted to follow.
Police were eventually able to move through the crowd and saw the car again at the Hume Highway at the Davey Road off-ramp.
They said Froon lost control of the car and crashed into a sign before continuing along Davey Road.

wow i bet they thought they were cool, feel sorry for the poor cops
What absolute wankers (in regards to the drink driving)
Cant say the same for the burnout. 'didn't have full control of his car' Looked like he did to me.

its definitely does indirectly encourage people to think 'fark that my cars not being crushed id rather run and take my chances'
was also interesting to read the 'no speed limit signs' and see people actually slowing down.
iiiinteresting indeed.
yeah i know burnouts hooning *insert buzzword* bla bla bla,
but honestly i wouldnt have a problem either if he wasnt pissed.
im sure back in the 80s people were doing skids in their vl's and vns etc, nodoby really gave a flying toss.
its just because of the "p-plater"/"high powered" car media frenzy that everyones sparked up a huge fuss about it all.
he was doing about 3kmph and looked liek he was handling it quite well, (i know he was DD fking moron but if he WASNT pissed), what is SO terrible about 2pissy black lines?
What the ****.aggravated burn-out
Aggravated burnouts, are you ****ing serious. That is the most retarded ****ing crime I have heard. Aggravated Burnout.... How is that different to a normal burnout, does the guy have a frowny face? Seriously get ****ed.

Maybe then more people would be less inclined to 'test' what their cars can do on public roads.
i dont condone drink driving, i dont see the point. but if my classic valiant was gonna get crushed... but then again it wouldnt have the plates on it.
True but its drink driving they know they're in the crap so they're inclined to run anyway. We had a bloke on the sunny coast been busted over 30 times d/d without a licence no jail time and he just keeps doing it. It my ute was going to get crushed I sure as hell wouldn't be hopping in it after a drink. I dont mean to crush their car unless they've been busted like 3 times
