I am a bit stunned by the number of my non religious friends who are not eating meat today because it is Good Friday.
I don't get why you would deliberately avoid a nice juicy Porterhouse Steak (what I am having) today when you are not religious.
What I want to know is anyone here avoiding meat today who is not religious and more importantly why?
because you will die in hell if you eat meat on good fridaywell thats what Jesus told me
*Munches on a hamburger*
You get lots of bad looks at the Fish n chip shop when you order a hamburger though![]()
well most people dont eat fish everyday..so its a good excuse i reckon to make your way down the fish shop and buy a few prawns and fish to cook on the bbq
I dont get it either Sash. My family isn't religious at all, however my mother always insists we don't eat meat on Good Friday.
I mean, if you aren't going to do one thing religious all year, why bother do it for one day?
Im having a BBQ at my place tonight, beers and red meat had by all.
lol, i'm having a bbq tonite.
Religious buffs don't like it, stiff ****in cheddar!
I'm not religious either but love my seafood so I'll use any excuse I can get.

I've heard the whole meat thing is a myth. So long as christians abstain from one thing that means a lot to them it's all good (and it's in the lead up to Good Firday, not necessarily on the day itself). Same old really, one person says one thing, and another accepts it as fact and pretty soon it's the absolute truth.

I drove past the Hell Pizza hearse todayBig black hearse with the Hell logo on the side, rego plate "STIFF", and a huge sign in the back window that says, "open ALL Easter long weekend!"
I lol'd
Also, the meat on Friday thing is not specific to Good Friday, it was every single Friday. But that proved to be too inconvenient so it was changed. Somewhat like quite a lot of religious beliefs.
Yep lent it's optional, and you can choose to abstain from eating meat on good friday, but again it's optional. The not eating meat thing goes back to Roman times when meat was a luxury and therefore meant a lot to people. So if you give up something that means a lot to you, you are covered. I'll be sure to question my priest and mother in law whom has a diploma of theology, just to make sure they aren't confused on the topic.

As you said lent is optional, I totally agree, but the origins of the abstinence in terms of Orthodox Catholicism and Anglicanism denote that meat must not be eaten on Friday during the Lenten season which disqualifies your statement of the meat thing being a myth.
ps. not having a go at you just clearing things up.
Fair enough, i like to be right all the time but as my wife keeps reminding that isn't always the case.

eat fish or god will smite thee, after jesus comes to your house and slaps you across the face with a salmon.
But as I said..Orthodox Catholicism and AnglicanismThe practice of fasting on Fridays, specifically on Good Friday, has probably been derived from the Jewish tradition of fasting before Passover.[3] The day preceding Passover, Jews fasted without eating until nightfall and then broke their fast with the celebration of the Passover meal. Early Christians extended this fast before Easter through the time in which Jews rejoiced over their Passover meal. Therefore, the fast continued until cockcrow (around 3 A.M.) the next morning. Although some churches later fasted on Saturdays, most early Christians did not fast on the Jewish Shabbat as a sign of respect, and therefore fasted only on Good Friday, which also held significance as the day of Jesus’ death.
EDIT: simply its done in commemoration of the sacrifice Jesus made for mankind.....
My mum is really religious, and forces the whole family to go to church at LEAST once on the easter weekend, she will go every day.
So they left the house first to get good seats, I then went to Red Rooster got some nice chicken and ate it on the way to church. But as long as they are paying for the fish and chips tonight then I ain't complaining.

Probably the same reason non-religious people celebrate Christmas and get married. Both of which are religious institutions.
