    Default Security camera legalities?

I've recently moved to a new house and I have a pretty dodgy suburb only a few hundred meters away from me. I've been thinking about installing a security camera out the front to overlook my work van which has nearly 10K of tools in it. It is fitted with an alarm but I'm still not convinced it's safe enough.

If I was to go ahead and do this do I have to put a sign up and is it only allowed to capture my own property?

A sign wouldn't hurt(might deter people) but cameras in public places aren't illegal.

Cheers for that. Pretty much so long as it isn't invading my neighbors privacy I can do it. I might look into one of those setups that record through the computer to a hard drive.

Interesting question. I would think sadly in this day and age you have to inform people they are being watched, however personally I think if you are doing nothing wrong then why should it bother you being captured on security cameras just walking past. My understanding is you are watched pretty much wherever you go in London as they have CCTV everywhere. I wonder if there is signage by every CCTV there.

Put up motion sensor activated cameras that record to either your Computer or to a dedicated HD recorder, that way theyre only recording when someone triggers them.If its only monitoring your property i cant see why anyone would have a problem with it anyway.

Just place them discretely out of sight & no one will be the wiser apart from the red glow of the infra red bulbs at night.

On a side note (sorry) Has anyone seen the amount of cameras in melbourne on public streets, noticed any signs? Either way you are recorded nearly every minute while in town.

Just keep the camera viewing angle to your own property and you should be fine, try a hidden one if you want to be discreet.

Use this software vitamin d : home
It's an excellent piece of video monitoring software and it's free when you using only 1 camera, you can use a USB or network camera (the site recommends a few models).
I use it. Available for PC and MAC.

is there any security lighting around? if so a regular camera might work better as infra red cameras aren't to flash when security lights are activated

Nope, it's too high. Well it's not too high but because of the angle of the driveway it won't fit. Plus one side is for the Statesman and the other is full of my crap.

Yea, I've already got them covered but if something happens it's just the inconvenience of being without them.

Yep, there is a sensor light which shines directly on the van. I can turn it off though.

Keep the light coming from anywhere behind the camera & it works nicely.
