[]Australia's population to grow to 42 million by 2050, modelling shows | News.com.au
In the last 10 years, the infrastructure in Melbourne has not kept up with population growth. The government, in my opinion, has done a very poor job of maintaing/upgrading our roads and public transport systems in particular. And it will quickly get worse rather than better based on the results of this modelling. People will be living in smaller dwellings/high rises to be closer to the city - I can't see how quality of life would improve in this scenario. I currently reside in an inner city suburb and in my short time here, 3 of the 4 houses around me have been demolished and replaced with double-storey townhouses overlooking my property/invading my privacy. Progress? Pfft.
Scary stuff.
They need to cease immigration, cease baby bonuses etc and slow down. We cannot expand without first expanding and getting basic infrastructure right.
Already parts of melbourne are like the slums, no doubt sydney is the same. Just look at where the UK is due to too high an immigration program.

Yeah its getting beyond a joke, soon an apple or an orange will cost like $10
Might head off to russian... At least its heading up again now... (jks..)
The difference between the city and country is increasing more and more too. While everyone in the city seems to have enough money to fund unlimited kids. Heaps of long time Australians in the country are hanging out for the maternity money just to have one (I know heaps of people waiting for this). What really needs to happen is to stop people moving to the major citys and fix the smaller places so they can support more people. Otherwise your going to end up with 20 million more people and every single one of them will be in Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane and maybe Perth
There is so many issues that need to be dealt with concerning population growth and it seems like the government is more interested in more money coming in from various taxes than the issue of how the areas infrastructure will cope with the growth. We vote these morons in and they couldn't give a damn what we think. If they want to do something they'll do it eg- Qld Labour party- amalgamation of councils, taking over our water supply, selling Qld public assets- the list goes on. It seems like when we go to an election you vote for the lesser moron that is less likely to stuff up and not the person that you think will do a good job running the country.
