VS SS or vt ls1

hmmm 165kw or 220kw, not sure on that one :P yeah the vt is heavier but LS1 would be the way to go, however ive read stories about the first of the LS1s in the VTs being dodgey, dont know if anyone can confirm this, hopefully any issues would have been sorted by now but yeah have a good browse.

The LS1 in the VT isnt the greatest, uses a lot of oil..etc. personally i prefer the VS SS, although i own a vt, i'd go a 304 anyday, plus, they sound so much better

its the 5l V8 that holden used, after...i cant remember which model. due to the change of rules int he V8 supercars, that they could only have a maximum of a 5l displacement. the 308 was a little over 5litres so they changed it down to a 304.

Wasn't this a warranty issue that Holden acknowledged and rectified in the ones that had the problem?

Yeah probably, but when you think about it, the 5litre is a motor that Holden have had for a number of years, they have had a lot of time to get it tuned nicely, and in the VT they just got the 5.7litre LS1. so no matter what warranty issues they rectify, it wont be as refined as the 5litre.
My dad has an 02 Monaro with an LS1, and it goes hard, but the engine is not the smoothest it could be. though the last of the Ls1's that holden issued were better, and had more power.
