GRAFFITI vandals will be forced to scrub off their own mess under a new sentencing option available to courts in NSW.
Step in the right direction IMO. just a few things, 30 an hour shoule be 15/10 an hour- The wage the average graffiti artist would make. and it shouldnt be an option it should just be the punishment on top of th actual fine. From Monday, NSW courts will have the power to order graffiti vandals to pay off their fines by cleaning up graffiti at a rate of $30 an hour.
A usual fine for a graffiti vandal is about $220, meaning it will take offenders about seven hours to work off their fine.
Today marked Australia's first graffiti action day in NSW - a joint state government and Keep Australia Beautiful initiative.
Premier Kristina Keneally, who took part in today's clean up, said making vandals do the tedious work of cleaning off graffiti would help drive home the message their behaviour is unacceptable.
"Offenders will quickly learn their vandalism has implications,'' Ms Keneally told reporters.

The graffiti clean-up orders program is part of the state government's new harsher package targeting graffiti.
Being convicted for graffiti vandalism can now land offenders in jail for up to 12 months.
+1 I think graffiti vandals are the scum of the earth. They should be made to clean up, min 100 hours would do plus a large fine.
**** I wish I was getting paid the equivalent of 30 dollars an hour to clean my own mess.
i'll clean it up for $30 an hour
Won't work, as they are working off their fine by the hour they will bludge most of the time do half an hours work in 7 hours, as if they would be scrubbing away for 7 hours. The $30 is laubable and an insult to hardworking law abiding citizens. They should be fined and forced to clean it up not by the hour but by the job eg. each offence is worth say 20 sq metres of scrubbing graffiti and with each subsquent offense the fine gets bigger and so does the area they have to clean, if nothing else after getting busted a few times the bastards arms will be too sore to lift a spraycan.
i see no problem with the artistic murals. got bigger problems that a bit of paint here and there.
People who Graffiti are lowest form of life. The poofters up here have started to "Tag" cars.
TO ANY PEOPLE ON HERE WHO GRAFFITI STUFF - YOU ARE COMPLETE SCUM. IF I CATCH YOU - YOU'LL BE DOING 200KM AN HOUR TIED TO THE BACK OF MY CAR.
$30 and hour, damn me, I want that much money. They should have to clean up their own mess anyway, and then still have to pay a fine or be give community service.

Sounds good expect for paying the fine as an option, fine them and make them clean it up.

**** yer, come hit up my house you little hoodlum. i wasnt refering to vandalising peoples property, but i see no problem with a mural chucked on a wall down a side street. i never said i supported painting peoples cars, houses etc, but id rather look at colour than a blank, brick wall. seems to me that some of the blank people here need some colour in their life.
this will work just as well as sending those damned p platers to intervention classes, those worked on them darn kids!
painting a brick wall is different from painting over a home. anywho, i still enjoy looking at the talanted artists that draw there creations in the one place to get the most exposure.
WHOA equivalent $30 per hour to scrub?? definitely should be less so they equate to more scrubbing hours, those folk are scum. i was at Connolea park in Gawler the other day and some clever mutt has drawn a massive dick on one of the stone walls that flank the entrance gates.
Must be a statement of how cool they are to their mates. families who go into that park shouldnt have to put up with that crap, some people just havnt got any respect
at least the courts are kind of sorta getting to better punishments
Then let them buy their own brick wall and paint it any way they like. Just because it's there does not give license to any turd to go and paint it. If the wall is not theirs then it should be assumed that there is no authority to paint on it. Makes no difference if it's a house, factory, fence, whatever.

What a ****ing joke!!!
A rate of 30 bucks an hours? How can they even suggest that?
That is a utter and complete slap in the face of every hard working, law abiding Australian!
What you have to also consider is that the rate of 30 per hour is an un-taxed rate. So they are basically saying that a vandals time is worth approximately $37 dollar an hour!!
That's the equivelent of someone being on a 76K+ salary!! Do they really thing that a vadals time is worth the same as someone who earns 76K?!?
How the chop did they work that rate out exactly?
Screw per/hour rate, They tag a wall, they can stay there cleaning it until it's gone. period.
