Default People thinking their cars are worth too much?

Not trying to rant here, i'm just seeing if other people have had similar experiences to me.

I've sold my vs and i'm looking at buying a new car.
Took an 01 VX S to the mechanic, needs $4000 of work. They guy wanted $8000 so i offered him $4000 .. because it needs alot of work. He still thinks its worth $7500 despite needing $4000 work straight away in order to be road worthy and drivable.. On top of that i am the only person to call or come and see the car, its been for sale for 5 months! Anyone else ran into ********s like this?

Its a huge waste of time and money!

You offer him $8000 on the condition that they get the work and your mechanic gives it the ok, or you walk away. Simple really.

Also what the hell was going to cost $4000? a new gearbox and engine lol?

I don't see that you've had an "experience". He believes his car is worth X amount, you don't, where's the problem?

there is a lot of overpriced cars out there, some people have no idea of what their car is really worth. But ultimately they will figure it out when the car doesn't sell.
If I like a particular car and feel it's a bit overpriced, I might offer the seller $1000 less than the advertised price. If he/she accepts it good, if not I look elsewhere. If (in my opinion) the car is grossly overpriced, then I won't even bother making an offer.

where the problem lays, is the quote you got from the mechanic.
Your mechanic says parts need replacement, the owners mechanic says they will last another 30,000km - so they don't need replacing.
You offered him just half the advertised price based on this - to be honest as the seller I would tell you to take a hike......

If the car really does need 4K worth of repairs, personally I wouldn't even bother making an offer - not like VX's are hard to find. I'd just look around for a better example

Yeh, i agree, offering someone half the price is an insult. IF i had a car for sale and they offered me half the price, i'd tell them where to jam thier offer.

What point is he getting "out there"? I'm not complaining about him, i just don't see why he thinks he's hard done by.

he has ever right to express his opinion in this thread as long as it abides by the rules. thats the point of a forum.

OT: yes many people believe they deserve too much for their cars, look at vns on carsales you see quite a few way overpriced. Feel free no to buy them if they are too expensive.

I'm hoping those prices are inclusive of labour for each part/s, completed, and a wash, and a detail inside & out thrown in?
Otherwise, I'm going to forge a certificate just so I become a 'licensed' mechanic and wrought people by that much too.
Specially considering all the work I've done on friends cars over the years for nothing.. lol

Meh - I have offered people half their asking price before and also been on the other side of the fence. Can't say I've ever seriously thought they would accept and didn't take offense when they didn't. That's just business/negotiation for you. You spending money and time on a car that you decided wasn't worth the asking price is your problem, not his.

I'd almost guarantee that my opinion of what my car is worth to sell will be higher than yours as a buyer. Thats how it works - either we come to an agreement in the middle somewhere or we both move on. Now you mention it - would you like to consider a 20 month old VE SSV??? lol

Car prices are all over the place, friends son has just picked up a VS Clubsport auto, sunroof,180,000klms(genuine HSV too) for the tidy sum of $2300.Undamaged not written off and from a popular auction house.Wont say which one as it was done before auction and i dont think its normal done like that.
The only down side is that one son is a red P plater that has already smashed two car after 3 months of driving. The second car was on the road for 24 hrs.

geez another thread on JC and the bloke who made it gets flamed.
    ..as usual

People who offer there cars for silly prices are what i like to call dreamers. Usually i don't bother or i just throw an offer i think is reasonable out there. I guess it comes down to weather he/she bought it new and is really struggling to come to term with how much its worth because of commodore depreciation.

I believe Sweefu is asking weather we have had any experiences like him, not weather he's mechanic is a rip off.

Pretty much summed it up. You all obviously havent been to many mechanics, they charge through the ass. OP Simply quoted the mechanics price, he didnt say he was going to be taking it to the mechanic either, he will probably do most himself.
I personally dont think offering 4k for an 8k car needing another 4, that makes it a 12k car, go buy a VZ or somethin, ridiculous.

the words overpriced and commodore ute go hand in hand....
i was seeing some ridiculous asking prices whilst searching for my vs.
but as evereyone has said if you look long enough and the seller is willing to compromise and "meet you in the middle" you will eventually find a decent price.

My uncle many years ago was selling his Ford Failaine V8 (the copper brown style) 1972 model I think

He wanted $2,200. After 6 months was offered $2,000. He said no way. (we all thought at the time he was mad for saying no)

The car was dumped for scrap 6 years later a rust bucket for no return.
