Speeding Abroad

I was wondering, what happens if you get caught speeding overseas? My dad is currently in Italy and if he were to rake up a collection of speeding fines (say from speed cameras) which may take a month to process but he were to leave the country before then, what would happen? Also, the cars a rental, so would the rental company charge him for the fines?

Anyone been in a similar situation?

he might be lucky and the rental co. might not on charge a fine. More likely they will pass on the full cost however.
I got one last year in Germany and it was passed onto me.

if they have his credit card details.. get him to cancel it and get a new one when he gets back

Heard this one done quite a few times before and works effectively. Just don't plan to travel back though.
