    Default ABS a DEFECT?

The other night a mate of mine got defected because the officer found an 'illegal' abs module in his stock as a rock vy s pack.

copper could not find one thing defectable on the car, but searched through the whole car and then came to the assumption that the abs module in his car was illegal and therefore defected him & sent him to regency.

    this is how it happend:
a girl and a guy ( both friends of mine ) had a car accident in the carpark we hang out in doing nothing illegal just plain ignorance, cop rocks up & asks 'whos the f*ckhead doing stupid shit'

two drivers explain the situation. cop looks into the carpark and sees at least 10/12 cars and calls police for backup

5 marked police cars, one undercover and two paddy wagons rock up. not worrying about the car accident but going around to every single car and checking for defects. Of the 10/12 cars to be in the car park, almost everyone of them got defected. i admit not all of them were stock but they were all locked. the police said to us 'whos car are these?' no one replied and he continued to say, if noone answers up we will do things to your cars you might not appreciate it.

    long story short,

how in the hell is abs illegal?
why do police feel the need to have that many police in a carpark when noone was doing anything illegal?

shouldnt police be out there hunting criminals not being in carparks with teens not doing anything illegal..

this really rattled me, sorry if it dragged on a bit lol

Three sides to every story. Your side, their side and what really happened.

if this was the one i drove past today...

you just met my favourite constable (normally spelt differant) since i got my calais he doesnt pick on me anymore, but hell he sees slightly modified cars and kids and he licks his lips.

I'll also point out something else, today the bikeys were doing their mothers day run, saw heaps of them over the place, easy visual defects on the bike, a few having joints while driving and one talking on his phone with cops around and they didnt do anything.

    SAPOL for ya.

This is why JC fails lately. Someone posts something up, and everyones gotta be a comedian and post something stupid, then everyone follows the trend. I'm really curious to hear more about the story, as getting defected for ABS is certainly something I haven't heard of happening before. I'd be going down to the police station and speaking to someone there about it.

How the hell do cops know what an aftermarket abs module is? Where was he even looking? Not even i could spot an aftermarket ABS module. Thats like getting an aftermarket water pump and saying its illigal because its not genuine holden. I would be going to court. Post up the defect slip to prove that was the only thing.

in total agreement lot of guys with massive ego's on here and self proclaimed experts.

Ok being someone who's been hitup by the locals in the northeast area before, i've been picked on and slugged with the following before :

+ driving with a mobile phone while parked

+ car defected for oil leaks (with no visible oil anywhere, he just kept claiming all these old cars did it, just needed a safety check, which coincidently was after he tried to write me a speeding ticket and didnt know the speed limit of the area and I made him check it, 40 zone my ass) got car cleared the next day

+ another local cop trying to do me for speeding, couldnt make it stick so had my plates scraped and he claimed my paint was 'coming off' so wrote me a $550 fine for my plates, wrote it up on the sheet as counterfeit license plates

+ mate who had a brand new car 2 days from the dealer pulled over, cop had book out before pulled over, went over the car with a fine tooth comb, then claimed the seats were defective as there were 4 screw holes in the front side of the seat with only 2 screws in it (he cleared defect the next day by just putting another 2 screws in each seat

+my father while well over the limit drove over a medium strip, police officer witnessed it, I informed the officer he had been drinking and asked that he bretho him ( i believe my father is a menace on the road) he 'had more important things to do'

my final icing on the cake is a local celebrity i deal with, he drives his brand new car with his p plates not displaye,d hoons a lot and the cops wont touch him. he talks with them, hte laugh and have cigarettes with him.

    Such is sapol.

Until he scans and posts a copy of the defect notice, and pictures of the car, my opinion will stay the same.

You can be defected on ABS units - if it's had a line locker device fitted. Usually the tell tale is flxible steel lines going into 1 or 2 ports on your ABS control module.

The reason it's defectable is because it can (unintentionally) interfere with your cars braking ability. ALl it takes is an electrical fault and you have no rear brakes.

Whether a linelocker has been fitted or not, is not clear in your post. If it's remains the factory ABS with factory steel lines, then it would not be easy to to determine with a locker had been fitted without checking the entire length of brake bundy tube.

Was with him an na the cop searched all over the Ute, done the usual tire check then asked to look under the bonnet an before my mate pulled the release the cop goes hold up wheres your H pattern on your gear shift (factory shifter knob as well), mates reply was that it must of worn off, then the cop starts writing out the ticket.

That's bullshit, but it is technically illegal, just cops out there with too much time on their hands tho.

the 'h' pattern is your gear selector indicator, and yeah its aroad worthy item. same in auto's if your selctor light doesnt work or the numbers are gone/painted over. the rule isnt for the driver, its for other people who may need to move the car in an emergency.

ABS is now an ADR i believe, cant remember which number it is and CBF looking it up just to prove a point, but i think it became manditory around 2002. so if your car is was made on or after 2002 then itll need its ABS functioning to be roadworthy. same as curtain airbags for 2008 and DSC for 2009. it sucks, but thems the rules. deal with them or dont drive.

I know there are rude arrogant cops out there. I have never been pulled over, apart from a speeding fine here and there and bretho's, in my 30 years of driving. Got pulled over the other week (turns out it was because I had left the P Plates on as my son used the car earlier) and boy was this guy an arrogant bastard from the get go. Once he discovered I was not a P Plater he told me what he could have fined me for, pointed out some illegal mods then told me to get in my car and leave!

From lots of posts on here I gather the only thing you can do is be humble, apologetic and don't give them any lip service, hard as that is. If you argue, debate and act in a rude manner they are more likely to find the defects and slap them on. My son has been pulled over a few times in his VS that has some illegal mods and yet never been defected. He said he is always polite, doesn't interupt, discusses issues and apologies. Then he gets in the car and screams abuse at them when they drive off.

This is actually true. You can be defected for it. Most have it on the gear knob anyway.

It wears off quite easily, especially after a few years of hard driving.
Luckily for me, my H pattern is on the console itself
