Hi!
So, I want to leave school. That's about it. I feel it's not much use to me anymore and I'm ready to go off into the big wide world!
Now, time for you to help!
I need reasons to give my parents, so that I can convince them to let me drop out.
I'm 16 and halfway through year 11 and currently going to a private school.
Been thinking and I think I want to go into something to do with cars! Whether it's mechanic stuff or what, I just love it all!
Thanks in advance!
Tyson
My greatest advice. Don't become a mechanic. You have hardly anytime at school left, why waste it? The best 2 years can be had in yr 11 and 12. And it will look alot better, no matter how you finish in your hsc, if you have finished yr 12.
Stay in school bro
BUT I HATE SCHOOL!
I would much rather be making money and doing something useful..
As a person who has employed hundreds of people over the years and about 20 at the minute - GET YOUR YEAR 12!!!!
I whole heartedly support the idea of doing what you love as a vocation. You spend way too much of your life at work not to enjoy it (at least most of the time). The thing is that getting your HSC (or whatever it's called in your state) opens **sooooo** many doors it's not funny. Not to say you can't get what you want without it however the effort will repay itself in spades when you get to the end.

I don't think any of you remember what assignments are like!
My problem is that I have no motivation for staying at school and doing well, I'm just getting into trouble for fu**ing around!
I only left in 07, yr 11 and 12 was the best yrs of skol you have ya mates there, u get ya ps and can drive around in your frees, yer the assignments can be hard but there getting your ready for the real world and real problems, and most employers will employ yr 12 over a yr 10 dropout, should see if you can do a school based traineeship get out there working and stil at school
mate i only finished year 12 a couple of years ago, and i wish i could go back.
no matter how hard or boring you think school is, you realise once its over that school was actually pretty sweet and a lot easier than you think.
5 days a week u just have to get up, get to school, hang out with your mates all day and sit through a few classes, do an assignment every now and then... its the life!
plus, completing year 12 looks so much better to any employers.
things will be much worse for you if you leave school now, count on that.
its worth sticking thru and finishing school. i know exactly what assignments are like, i'm at uni at the moment (never thought i would end up here)
reaper has a quality point there, it may not seem like having the last 2 years of school qualifications is going to help with the career you want to do, and the subject might not be that helpful. BUT. finishing school even shows a level of commitment, and employers would rather someone that is committed to doing what they have already started when the going gets tough, rather than to say stuff this its too hard and wont be benefitial to me in any way.
i know from experience that even in the automotive industry, which you might not think has much to do with school, that many employers will not even have the time of day for someone that has dropped out of school. that being said, i do know of people who have left school early and have been successful in the automotive industry, but you've got to do research.
so if you were to leave school now, have you got a job fully secured or are you just going to wait around and see what comes up? if you do leave school, make sure you've got something lined up because if you're just sitting around searching for work you may as well be at school.
whats the jobs situation around you in the field you want to be in at the moment? many positions? are local businesses willing to take on first year apprentices? this is all research you would be best of doing before you leave school.
im not telling you how to run your life, but the last position you want to be in is struggling to get a job in the industry you want to because you are getting constantly knocked back from employers just because you haven't finished school, and having to swallow your pride and go back to school.
and yes, that happens.
best of luck anyway mate.
yeah i miss school, never thought i would say that but even at the end of school when everyone says 'yeah we'll keep in touch all the time' it rarely happens like that.
its like on the movie billy madison, except for the part where he says high school is exchanged for leaving school

Oh of course!
If I was to leave school, I'd have a job lined up before anything else starts, would never leave with no secure plans.
I'm not sure, I'm a quick learner and I seem to grasp things really easily, I just don't have the motivation for school.

DO you have a career advicer at your skool hit them up about it
I'd advise you against dropping out. You may hate school but I'm pretty certain you'll hate a shitty bottom feeder job even more.
I dropped out of high school halfway through year 10 thinking I knew it all and didn't need an education. Guess what? Not having VCE closed a lot of doors for me professionally. In the end I ended up going back and doing it part time so I could get into uni. If you think VCE is hard now, it is even harder trying to juggle it with a full time job on top of it. There is no good at all that can come from you dropping out of school. Delayed gratification my friend. Think about what that means for a moment.
If you wanted advice, listen to the people in this f*king thread. They're telling you to stay in school, and you came here for advice, so you should listen.
I really wanted to drop out in year 11. There was this girl in my english class who I was fcking and things got messed up and I was on the tipping verge of dropping out, but I stayed and now that I look back on it I am really, really happy I did. Time went by heaps quick too.. Plus, in those last two years I had good time to socialise and not worry about work.
SBAT sounds so good!
Some research is in order, I believe!
i reckon if you can get yourself a decent fulltime job doing what you like then drop out but if you dont have a job waiting stick with it.

I left at the end of year 10 3 years ago..
IMO, Best thing I ever did, I left, Had a 2 month break, Beach/spear fishing/beers, Was the life.
Once I had a bit of time hanging out with my best mate, I decided I was ready for a job, Started casual at my local IGA, Went full time, Did a traineeship there, Became a senior(Shift manager) Had to look after 3-4 juniors etc.
Recently (4 weeks ago) I left that job and started as a plant operator, Driving big tractors, I am absolutely loving it. Working with great guys, Have a great boss, The moneys good.
Would I go back and stay for year 11/12? I still happily say no.
I wouldn't have 1/4 of the things I have now, Letter-lone a Nissan Patrol with 35's/lockers/reduction gears/winch etc, A statesman with everything thats on it, + the numerous amounts of other hobbies I have.
Everyones different though, Thats just my experience with the beginning of life.
Just a heads up to youth (up to 21) who have not completed Year 12 or have a Cert II (in anything), if you apply for Centrelink benefits you will be required to study 25 hours per week until you achieve either Year 12 or Cert II. If you do not study 25 hours per week they will cut you off benefits.
Therefore it is not beneficial to leave school before you obtain these qualifications because you are going out of the frying pan and into the fire.
finish school, i ended up with a shit UAI, but i didnt plan on going to UNI anyway, looks better having done the HSC, just get a weekend job to get some petty cash and give it bigger thought, as you will likely change what you want to do.
I did a diploma in web design after school and then decided i wasnt interested in doing it anymore.
I agree with basically everything in this thread. High school, even grades 11 and 12, are the hell of a lot easier then the larger world. You think assignments are hard? Then go get the mechanic apprenticeship you want and learn how much harder being the workplace shit-kicker is, especially for basically no pay.
In grade 12 I did my fair share of 2000 word assignments and 10 minute oral presentations, now at uni I am doing 4000-5000 word assignments and 20-30 minute presentations. One of my mates works in a job were basically every day he writes up documents over 5000 words, and some are much bigger, every day! School is a lot easier.
Does your school have a careers counselor? Go speak to them, they are a fountain of knowledge.
If you need an excuse for your parents to get out of school then getting out is definately not the option for you. You can either sit down with your folks and discuss this with them, or likely if you just make something up or whatever, it will probably result with you moving out, good luck with a Woolworths/McDolanlds/Apprenticeship wage.
