A JUVENILE justice worker had a prison-crafted "shiv" held to his throat as six young thugs made a daring escape from a youth justice centre in Melbourne last night.
The teens, aged between 15 and 17, fled the Parkville Juvenile Justice Centre about 10pm last night and are believed to have already committed an armed robbery on a Coles supermarket and stolen a car, The Herald Sun reported.
One of the teens has been arrested this afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Sir Ken Jones has warned that they are believed armed and dangerous.
A justice centre source told the Herald Sun: "The youths said they wanted something and the justice worker went down to help them and he was overpowered.
"He was brought up to the movement control area and they threatened to harm him unless they were released. So they had to be released."
The source said the guard, 71, was physically well, but had suffered a terrible ordeal.
"He’s got a cut under his chin where the shiv was held against him," he said.
"He’s been held hostage so he’s not too well."
The six youths are serving sentences for various offences, including assault and armed robbery and were said to be wearing blue tracksuits when they escaped.
The supermarket robbery is believed to have been captured on CCTV.
Police said at least four members of the group, armed with knives, allegedly entered the Coles supermarket on a highway in Dandenong and demanded cash.
The group then allegedly stole a customer's car, from out the front of the store and fled the scene.
A Coles staffer, who wished to remain anonymous, said the youths entered the store about 4am.
"They all had their faces covered with, like, big towels or scarves. They were crazy," he said.
"They just ran around the store like mad.
"It was a pretty scary night. We were all pretty scared about it."
Sir Ken said the group was "pretty well" known to police.
"They are pretty desperate. They are at large, they clearly used violence to get out of the facility and they know we are after them," he said.
DHS spokesman Bram Alexander said the security breach at the justice centre was being taken very seriously.
"A comprehensive internal review is under way into the events which took place and resulted in the escape," he said.
"We are assisting the police in their efforts to apprehend these young people."
Mr Alexander said any CCTV footage of the incident would be handed over to police.
The group is believed to be travelling in a 1999 blue Ford Fairmont sedan, registration POG 059.
Police have advised the public not to approach the teens, but to call 000 as quickly as possible.
