now sitting having a beer contemplating next move.
spent the day reinstalling reconditioned heads on a VS commadore S1 V6.
all going quite smooth. till went to put on alternator bracket.
there was alredy a torque headed bolt in the spot the bracket should go.
DOH. DOH DOH
the heads are installed the wrong way round. BUT. as far as i can tell they are identical anyway does anyone know if there is a left and right head or are they just the same? really there was no indication anything was untoard. right hand spark plugs face forwards left hand spark plugs face backwards. exhaust valve line up with exhaust manafoled & intake too. only the one bolt which we never removed before getting the heads done is the only indication to us that we got it wrong?
i have no idea if they are interchangeable
but why don't you just take them off and put them back on the right way around?
The heads are identical, nothing to worry about.
Thanks for the confirmation the heads are identical. thats pretty cool engineering. i'll continue putting it back together.
why make two different heads when the same one twice works
99% of V6's & V8's have the same head side for side. Chev, Fords, Holdens, Toyotas.
Thanks all
got it togeter last night. engin oil flush treatment.
new oil & filter. refilled & bled cooing system.
new ballancer (boy is it a bitch) but fabricated a pretty easy tool which made it a snack.
3 bits of 10mm square bar bent to a very short allen hey shape to be hooks that slide into the oval shaped holes in the front of the balllancer.
the ballancer holes are 8mm wide so the hooks need to be ground a bit to fit.
welded these to the flats of a 7/16 nut such that with a clockwires turn of the tool the hooks would engage the slots on the ballancer.
undid the ballancer bolt but left it in place (a few threds into the crank)
then pushed against the bolt head with the threded bar.
hey presto.
could post pics if anyone interested.
yes ive heard of a rattle gun getting the bolt off is the easy bit. the pulleys on VS's and i think all of the v6s except the real early ones are an interference fit on the shaft and need a special tool to pull em off the shaft. the inside diamater of the pulley actally stepped so at first it slides on easy till the key is engaged then it is effectivly pressed on when tightening the crank bolt. anyway if you areinteresed see post under general forum
