Okay after going for a ride a week or so on a reasonable mtb i thought i would like to get back into riding, i used to ride and was ok, not the best and not the worst then i gave up and got into bmx but the time has come i have given that up becuase there just to small. I'm looking for a bike thats less then 1000 and it can be second hand if need be but what would some of you guys reccomend, i was thinking something like a kona or s/h stp or something. But i read the thread Darren posted and a few of you guys are cluey so any recommendations would be appreciated![]()

What are you intending on riding? How crazy are you going to get? If your just going to be cruising smooth fire roads look at a brand new Giant hardtail designed for cross country. Giant seems to offer the best value for money in terms of componentry etc.
I see you mentioned an STP, this model stands for Street, Trail, Park, in other words jumps etc. Seeing as you have a BMX background this might be a good choice as it will feel closer to a BMX than a run of the mill Giant cross-country hardtail. It will also have heavier duty componentry and a more durable frame. On the downside, it will be heavier and less comfortable to ride long distnaces than an XC bike.
There are plenty to choose from in both categories and 1000 will get you something brand new (it will be a hardtail and not a dual suspension bike and probably not the best parts either) or a pimpin secondhand bike. Other brands to look at would be Kona, Norco, Specialized, GT and Giant.
Also i notice your in canberra, if you want to see all the different brands I just mentioned check out Mal Adjusted in Dickson, Bike Superstore in Mitchell and one of the many Onya's. Good luck mate.
this looks alright for a all rounder bike, but ya gotta pick it up from sydney
Merida 2009 Trans-Mission TFS 900-D - $982.80 : TBSM, The Bike Shed Mortdale, Australias Online Downhill and Freeride Mountain Bike Shop
$3,150 rrp down to $982.60 pretty good value.
but check out ebay, i'm looking at the moment and some good bargains rock up from time to time.
Cheers wagon and old mate, yeah well i was just thinking some local trails, no where near like extreme downhill just some fun medium jumps and stuff. Yeah i dont mind s/h im a bit of a cheap arse some times LOL. Personally i wouldnt go near onya but that was only when i was into bmx but i think there alot better with mtb. That merida is pretty sick though
Have a look on this forum, there is a good for sale section with heaps of cheap bits.
ROTORBURN Forums
yeah its pretty kitted up, but i guess they just want to move the older model stuff quick. i got my pushy 2 grand off coz it was new old stock. im not racing or the worlds best rider so having an older bike that is still brand new isnt an issue.
Cheers for the opinions, my bmx just got flogged, dirty f***ers. Anyways theres nothing i can do except wave away atleast 1k worht of bike. So i guess its time to buy a mtb
yeah i am interested pm me if you like with a pic and price. Nah i havent mate didnt think there was much point really, i know what will happen. It will get resprayed and the parts will be put onto theif's mates bikes and thats that. It really does give you the shits though, its not like the bike was left out the front so some c*** new it was there. And the fact they where willing to come around the house when everyone was home is another thing
