Premier John Brumby rejects Mark Skaife's call for speed limit to be lifted to 140km/h | Herald Sun
And he urged police to shift their focus from speeding to other traffic offences to cut the state's road toll - currently at 147.
EastLink, the Princes Freeway between Melbourne and Geelong and the Hume Highway are all earmarked for speed increases under Skaife's proposal to relax existing road rules.
Police, fearing a traditionally horrific Queen's Birthday weekend road toll, have booked almost 2500 people since Friday.
Skaife said speed was not necessarily to blame for accidents and urged authorities to lift the legal limit.
"Our roads are very, very good so there's no way in the world that our speed limits couldn't be 130 or 140 km/h," he said.
Skaife, an Order Of Australia medal recipient in 2004, said the Brumby Government and police should focus more on dodgy drivers rather than speeding.
"We must encourage young people to drive safer, in newer cars, encourage the Government to design better roads and safer roads and our driver-learner system has to get better," he said.
"If you get those three things right, definitely you will improve the road toll."
Its true, but doesn't raise revenue. Clearly, our government doesn't have a clue, or simple doesn't care about me and you. :P
Pretty right there soop - no revenue if the fines are reduced. 100 km/h on both Eastlink and the Hume is ridiculous.
Reaper
Brumby is as bent as they come.
You can tell just by looking at him :P
100 kph on eastlink....its enough to put you to sleep.
The three roads he has mentioned can easily handle 140 kph, maybe he should run for premier.
Totally agree with Skaife, 100K's on those roads is crazy. Although, it's the low performance drivers that will be the problem. Also, unless they get rid of the old turdboxes of cars off the roads the speed limit will never be able to be raised (not saying that people shouldn't drive older cars, aslong as they are well maintained and looked after).
he is on the ball. reading the comments is funny but saddening at the same time.
why should this person be allowed on the road haha what a joke. if you can't handle a car on a straight piece of smooth road just because your speedo is registering in the DEATH IMMINENT range then how do you handle a car in an emergency situation. just the normal oh f*** slam the brakes and freeze? retard.Skaife needs to wake up to himself....140km/h??? Are you okay? Young drivers havent got the experience to be able to drive a car at that speed....I've been driving for 16 years and have a good driving record and cant drive at that speed...And im sorry but not everyone can afford super fast new cars Skaife...even if they could why would you encourage them to go faster? Nutsssss!!!!!
years behind the wheel means little compared with proper training and education in regards to road hazards and car control. yes because you've been on the road for X years means that you have encountered some risks and survived, but that does not mean that you have fully understood what led to you surviving.
i think the main body of skaifes idea is going to be overlooked, which is sad because it is on the ball. get stricter on licencing, you can't tell me that drivers that have a lower skill level make less mistakes?? get the old bombs off the road, get the unskilled drivers off the road and surely the risks with driving would be lower?
but as long as people think that speed is evil and is the only risk on our roads then this has no chance. speed is only 1 risk, there are many out there. just because you are wearing a seatbelt and driving under the speed limit does not mean that you are safe.
Too many older cars and older drivers for this. Can you imagine Grannie easing across three lanes in 140km/h traffic in a Hyundai Getz. No thanks!
A trye blowout at 140km/h is a hell of a lot worse than 100km/h. I seriously can't see any speed limit changes as drastic as this for many years to come. Good on him for trying though.
You are right,he maybe used to traveling at these higher speeds but we have been taught differently.
Imagine upping the speed limits to 140 tomorrow,i think it would be a bloodbath.
Too many shit heaps continue to be on the road and not enough enforcement to keep the crap heaps and idiots off the road.
Are we there yet?
the speed limit is a limit, its not what you have to travel at. if you are unable to decide what speed is a safe one without a sign telling you to, well you need to hand your licence in.
the concentration on the raising speed limit part of skaifes story is messing it up for the rest of it. he would have done better to not include a comment on the speed limit in this day and age of the idiots running around screaming death of humans and puppies just because one risk is increased.
the average idiot on the road just does not understand risk.
In some states it is illegal to go 10% under the speed limit too. You may find that you DO have to travel the speed limit. If YOU can't keep up to speed, YOU need to hand your licence in.
You guys doing under the speed limit can sometimes be as dangerous as the speeders.
My hilux is the same! Pushing to keep up with 100km/h. What about people on Scooters. Haha imagine the speed wobbles at 140km/h when a B Double overtakes them.
Yeh, well mabye 140 is a bit high.....However, he's not saying raise every road to 140. The roads he is referring to are open freeways, so there is another lane (or 2) for slower cars to do whatever is there comfortable speed.
HAVE NO FEAR, John Dumby has already rejected Skaife's proposal.....gee didnt take him long, at least we know how to get a pollie to come out of the woodwork lol
If you don't own a car that can do 140kph then perhaps you need a new car lol. It is true that it is not speed that kills but driver fatigue, Dangerous driving and Drink driving are the real killers.
whatsn the bet Bumby will drop all speed limits by 10 k's now lol
Yeah that was one of his points as well. Focusing on getting unsafe cars off the roads. What people dont understand is, if they were to raise the limits on the roads such as Eastlink (which could handle it EASY, its a long straight boring ass drive) it is only the maximum limit. If people dont want to drive at 140, simply sit in the left hand lane and travel at 100. If people were trained and new their limits their wouldn't be a problem. Ive driven to Queensland quite a few times from Melbourne and the Hume Highway is downright dangerous at 100-110 as well as the northern part of the Pacific where its dead straight and is a very good road.
End of the day, the Government wont do it because a) they make to much money from speeding offences b) if they actually started policing UNSAFE driving (not using blinkers and such) average joe blow would lose their license and c) it would cost far to much money to actually implement safe driver training and proper licensing schemes as well as restricting people such as the elderly.
Sure as **** isn't in NSW, or it just isn't enforced. Travelling along the F3 (major road between Sydney and Newcastle dead straight kms of visibility for those playing from another state) in perfect weather yesterday and AT LEAST 20-30 drivers where not able to do the 110km/h speed limit, most sat at 90-100 and even one or two at 70-80km/h! and no these were not provisional drivers just ****tards.....
Funny though if you do the speed limit or even below and have a prang (that can not be blamed on another driver) its negligent driving as you were not driving to the conditions... gotta love laws based on revenue raising rather than focused on safety and prevention of accidents....
Your dead right mate, in WA it is a law but is rarely enforced. I have actually rang the local coppers and reported assholes in crap car's going 40km/h under the speed limit on a highway. Once it is reported, they have to act. When i rang the coppers, he had to enquire with his supervisor as to whether it was a law.
I presume it is in most states, but never enforced unless reported. Plus half the cops probably wouldnt even be aware it is illegal. I think they categorize it as dangerous driving. (it is obviously different for trucks etc that are speed limited to 100km/h)
This is on channel 7 right now. They are say we should look at Germany to reduce deaths on our roads.
