Up until last week before i was made redundant i was working in cold storage . I was talking to another guy who works in a similar job and he asked how much cold allowance i got paid , i told him i got nothing , to which he said i should get a percentage of your hourly rate for every hour or part thereof you are in temps below -18 degrees Just wondering if anyone out there works in cold storage what the rules are about this . I worked about 3 hours a day in minus 20 degrees and the rest of the day was in 2-3 degrees . Might as well see if i can hit them for some back pay as well as 4 hours worked on the last day they " forgot " to pay me.
Thanks Dave C

loNever heard of it, we work for 4 different cold strorage transporters who also have their own cold/freezer stores. I know people who work at Oxford, Swires etc none of them are aware of such allowance. It could be your mate works on a thug driven worksite where uniuons demand bullshit money is paid for bullshit reasons? Perhaps you had a good employer and it is incorporated into your existing rate?

I get i think 2-3 bucks extra a week (based on 20 hours a week) for "Freezer Allowance". I work in Perishables at a supermarket so a lot of my shift is spent in the milk fridge (-5 to 2 degrees) and in the Freezer unit (-19 to -30).
Might paid under situations I imagine, i.e If your job is not working in that enviroment, then you are paid extra for working in that enviroment.
My missus works in a room of 2-3 degrees, every single day, and isnt paid cold allowance, of any sort, just continually paid peanuts.
Yeah woolworths 'Freezer allowance' is about 4 cents/hr
OK done a google search i found it in the Storage services wholesale award 0.15% of hourly wage lol not worth worrying about

Not really sure mate, I used to work in a Drycleaner which in Summer would often get upto excess of 50 degrees, no extra![]()
Our EBA has a clause for allowances which includes a $0.60 allowance for working in cold places - however I was always under the impression this was a feature of our agreement, rather than a legislated requirement. If your contract doesn't have such a clause, I don't like your chances.

One of the funniest things that happened to me the other week was i went out side in the rain then went straight into thr freezer and because the soles of my boots were wet they instantly stuck to the floor and i fell in a heap

Yeah I got so fed up with the glove situation I bought myself a pair and never let them go. Same as pens as the Storeman. And bin keys. And well, just about any company prioperty that will get lost/stolen. And as for the RF Units, well I can't take it home, but I sure as hell never let it out my hands when I'm at work or else I won't be seeing it again that day.
Most comical thing I have seen in the freezers was when the manager of Perishables had his hair start to ice up a little when he got soaked on the way into work.
