Default Legalities of driving half a car!

    Hi guys,

Recently had a stupid bike accident and can't drive a manual for a while. Only Auto car that i have is the vr ss that i am doing up.

My question is, what are the legalities of driving the car without rear seats or passenger seat. Also, what are legalities of driving without centre console, glovebox, fuse cover, roof lining etc?

I am unsure if it is a roadworthy issue as the seat is correctly installed, mechanically A1 with all mirrors, windows etc.

I did get pulled over once before with the car in its current state and did not recieve a yellow sticker. I did however recieve other unrelated fines that may have made the cops not worry about the roadworthy issue.

    Any help would b appreciated.

make sure the seat is in properly, and that all the light work, even the shifter lights. Roof lining is kinda needed, but you could probably get away with it.

For the first time in history, you could voluntarily get a check done by the RTA? Bet nobody haas ever gone in there by free will before lol. Although I suppose if you do that they'd fine you for driving it there if it's considered defective

You can go first! Stuff that! hehe. I dare say that legally i could get fined for it but it would have to be a pretty unhappy cop having a bad day!

You need to check local laws and ADR's.

I dare say if you got pulled over, you would be rick rolled by police.

From my experience, you don't actually have to have anything wrong with your car to get stickered(I got stickered because the cop "thought" it was too loud, after a visit to the pits, it wasn't). If the cop wants to give you a sticker, he probably will knowing there's a good chance there will be one or two things unroadworthy about the interior

It could go either way. I got pulled over in my VP with only the drivers seat and nothing was said. Make sure all the lights etc work and that nobody is sitting in or attempting to sit where a seat should be and you should be ok. WA state laws may be different to vic in that respect however.

youll probably get reamed if you get pulled over.

your car is regod as a 5 seat passenger vehicle not having 5 seats will be an issue.

Reap, just because nothing happened doesnt make it legal lol.

In fact, if you do not have a backseat(in a sedan registered as such) in Vic, it is defectable and illegal.

In canberra if your car is complied to seat 5 people it must have 5 road worthy seats / seatbelts etc.. so could be in for some trouble mate.

True, however if you go down to vicroads it's a simple matter of changing the car from a 5 seater to a 2 seater (or whatever). Happens regularly when you cage out a tarmac rally car.

Same as SA. You can remove the rear seat/seatbelts, and register the car as a 2 seater, but if its still registered as a 5 seater, it must have 5 seats and seatbelts.

i'm sure if you lay low you'll probably get away with it, just avoid parking it in busy areas etc. at least this will push you to get your seats done quicker

I got defected once for not having the bottom of the back seat in. Being a hatchback I also got defected for not having the sub "mounted" down in the boot. I never thought you could get defected for that, but I did! Maybe it was a prick of a cop. Strange thing is I have no idea how it would be unsafe to have an unmounted sub in the boot. It's not like its going to fly around the cabin.

subs can fly around, a bloke hit a powerpole up the road from me a few years ago in a v8 vp calais and his sub ended up about 15 metres from where he hit.

but it seems funny that you got busted for that. does that mean anything in your boot needs to be secured properly?

Cheers for all the advice guys, it'll all come down to how the cop is feeling on the day as to whether he defects me or not.

I also forgot to ask whether it was illegal to have different sized rims on. IE: I have two vy ss 18 or 19s on the front and two stock vr ss rims on the back. Fairly sure that's a no no!

Now sure about the above question though, relating to sub in boot.

Your kidding right? Its common sense that anything in your car has to be properly secured. Moreso with a hatch (or wagon) as those items can easily end up in the passenger cabin during a crash.

in QLD you need a modification plate if you change the seating capacity.
Not sure about the other states though

I'm trying to find an article that was in a paper about a year ago in relation to this. It was either an english or Australian paper, but what happened was that the passenger was killed in a car crash by an unrestrained dog. Wasn't a massive dog from memory (30kg mark) but the force of it hitting the passenger in the head killed it.

My question is do dogs have to be restrained inside cars as well?

My mate has a turbo Nissan Micra (older one)
he had to re-register it as a 2 seater to remove the rear seats legally. (so he could install his 6 point harness brace)

To reinstall the rear seats he needs a engineers certificate.
Short answer is No it is not legal unless you notify Vic roads the seating capacity has changed. (licensed to carry 0 passengers)

Put it back together and drive it.

Yes they do. Any animal in your car has to be restrained.
