hey guys
im returing from the UK at the end of the european summer, and looking into bringing a car back to sydney, but i have a few issues which i cant seem to find the answers on the interweb as ive found a few conflicting stories, so does anyone no any sites that could answer these questions
1. can i import a car that is already sold in australia, (the car im after is a 1998 porsche 911 [/URL])
2. do i have to own it for a minium time before import?? or been a UK resident can i get around that
as you can see, owning a 911 for ~20 grand seems worth the effort
cheers for any help

hit up ari666. he SHOULD know.
*or he can buy it for 20 and sell it to you for 40*
IIRC you need to have owned it and driven it for at least 12 months overseas. There was a member on here called Dans_S4 who imported an Audi RS4 from the UK. This is the thread on it......................Importing a car
Whoever said 'There is no substitute for cubes' had obviously never heard of Jet power
Dan's story seems to be spot on, I've heard that from a few people when importing cars.
Then sourcing parts can be a hassle when something goes wrong, even the simple things like pollen and air filters can be completely different because the cars not for a hot or dusty climate, so the ones kept in Aus for cars built for a hot and dusty climate, and are a different shape (true for Volvo and Jaguar at least)
911's are great cars but just be prepared to pay the maintenence bills.
i workd across the rd from a porsche mechanic and soem of the bills they handed out to customers were unbelievable.
lets just say that for a manual conversion on a 993 was just short of 20k
Some useful info here.
Freight Plan International : Importing Motor Vehicles into Australia
Considering pristine 993's are still going for over $100,000, $20,00 isn't all that much. Pretty similar to converting a $20,000 Commodore percentage wise. I wouldn't call a gearbox conversion a maintenance item anyway.

im fully aware of the cost involved, ive made enough contacts over hear so parts are not an issue, i would not own it for more then 12 months anyways, the amount of salt/grit they put on the road has made my 07 astra rust underneath, so it would be a short term 'HEY GIRLS CHECK OUT MY 911' type thing then sell and hope for a profit,
basicly i just need those two questions answered, just to get it registered, after that i dont give a shit what happens to it, it more for a profit then anything
bravotwozero and shortstuff- cheers for the link
generally when you try to make a profit, things go pear shaped..
only way you can bring a 98 model in is personal import. you have to own it for a minimum of 12 months and have documentation to prove that you have i.e. MOT reciepts, tax reciepts etc. i was looking at doing one when i lived over there but it turn out to be the same costs all up as buying one in OZ so i didnt bother, mind you i was looking at 12K quid 89-90 models. a 98 may actually be worth while
it is RHD... right? cos if LHD then you will have to swap the steering over.
edit* here is one for 55k
http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...d=12954D01DF58
so yours is 12k, shipping was 2.5k so 14.5 quid= 25k AUD to own the car and have it shipped, 10% gst ( around 2k so $27k) customs duties, steam cleaning (potentially), IA applications etc *shrug* i dunno, say a grand, engineers will be another grand, so $29k i reckon all up you could score that for under 35K ON ROAD! lol, thats pretty f'ing good man.
also if your wonderinga customer recently was forced to send his TVR back to japan because of paperwork that wasnt complete. he was legit had all boxes ticked, customs just questioned his ownership and how much he purchased the car for and refused to release it.there must be a way i can cheat the whole 'owning it for 12 months
EVERYTHING has to be perfect or itll cost you a loooot of money for no car.
thanks for the advice ar1666, looks like its a no go then, 12 month onwership is the big issue, and i dont wanna pay all that money to have it denied at some port in sydney,
was a good dream though...
see if the Indonesians can put it on one of their little boats. generally the little fellas get let in to the country that way, so why not a 911.
lol, cause those little Indos dont go to the RTA to get registered
*cough* rebirth *cough*
lol illusionalvr. i have not heard that dirty word for about 8 years. they killed rebirths and bankrupted a bunch of engineers when they changed to the RAWS system. lol, i heard it was an NSX owner that kicked it all off. bought an NSX, crashed it, went to claim insurance, assesor inspects the car, says "WTF, this isnt a honda prelude" checks the build plate, sure enough.. honda prelude... checks the vicroads label.. honda coupe...
after that there was a HUGE mess and all the cheats got sent to either jail or the poor house.
How to Buy and Import Your Dream Car | importyourcar.com.au
not sure on the 12 months ownership anymore BUT need all paperwork for government filled in correctly
seeing as you want to import a post 1989 car it must be complianced for Australia ,i "think" you need to have a RAWS workshop already lined up to do the adr compliance before the car is shipped ,not to sure about that
I brought a car in from the USA Pre 1989 model and there was no problems that i had only owned it for 2 months
On the other hand steam cleaning in Aus by our border protection guys was messy with the complete interior drowned ,yet when i stripped the car down to restore it i removed around 3 kg of dirt that they had not cleaned off !
