A massive search is underway in Melbourne for a gunman on the run after he escaped from police during a high-speed pursuit.

Police have locked down parts of inner Melbourne in the Richmond precinct near the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Olympic Park, and blocked off roads east-bound on Olympic Boulevard, Batman Avenue, Punt Road, Wellington Road and Brunton Avenue.

A police spokesman said the gunman had earlier been involved in a pursuit at an unspecified location.

Several police cars and a van are gathered at AAMI stadium on Swan Street as police in flak jackets trade information on the armed man.

Police are also guarding points of entry to the cordoned-off zone.

The man is described as being of Spanish appearance, with dark straight hair, believed to be aged in his 20s, and wearing a dark jacket with a red or orange T-shirt underneath and silver tracksuit pants.

"We believe the vehicle has been discarded by the man and the offender is on foot," a police spokesman said.

Witnesses last saw the armed man on the Rod Laver footbridge about 10.15am (AEST).

The footbridge has been closed to pedestrian traffic, while the MCG and Rod Laver Arena have also been locked down.

Trains have been stopped at major stations including Richmond, South Yarra and Caulfield since about 10.15am, affecting eight train lines on the metropolitan network.

"Police have asked us to not move any trains through Richmond station," a Metro trains spokesman said.

All workers and residents with houses in the Jolimont and Olympic Park area are urged to stay indoors and lock down any outbuildings, including garages and sheds.

Members of the public are urged to avoid the area around the MCG and Olympic Park and not to approach the man, but to call triple zero.

Damn straight they do!! The cops go to all the effort of catching these pricks and the magistrates give them a slap on the wrist and sends them out to do it all over again.
