I'm heading on a long drive in the VN next month, Adelaide to Alice Springs, although it could end up going all the way to Darwin (may or may not be switching cars in Alice) I've started thinking about what to carry with me as far as tools and spare parts go and thought it would be worth asking what other people take with them on long trips..
Cheers
friggin everything. my car is a driving toolbox. lol, i only just took the acetylene out yesterday. that wouldnt be fun in a crash.
i think you boot should be full to the brim with drinkable water. take some oil, and fan belts or a pair of panty hose, a few pairs of vice grips (when you need them, youll know) a big hammer and a little one. a spare tyre thats inflated and balanced and will fit both front and rear without throwing out your wheel alignment.
other than that there are servos EVRYWHERE nowadays so there really isnt that much to be worried about. just a few stretches of open road where you could get into serious trouble. take your phone
i drove that road this time last year... all i can say is take your ipod!!! its the most boring road in the whole of aus! No phone reception or radio as soon as you leave Adelaide, when you hit coober pedy i had reception again then nothing til Alice springs, altho i did get reception at Ayres rock!
We drove from Melbourne to Adelaide to Alice springs to tennant creek (shit hole!!) then across to Cairns then back down the coast to Melbourne again.
We actually broke down on the Stewart highway in the middle of no where!! burst a heater hose managed to rig it up enough to get back to the last servo, at times they can be 200+km apart luckily we were only 50km from the last one, the servo charged us $35 for 1metre of heater hose!!!
I defo wont be driving that road again in a hurry..
Take plenty of tools and water with you, any any spare parts you might need (what car are you taking?)
Good luck!
Chicks and beer
Australia. Love it or leave it
angle grinder and mini spool. surprising VN owners across victoria.
Take the normal stuff like a hydraulic jack, full tool box. plenty of drinkable water, 2 spare tyres and a UHF radio with good antenna, But remember that if you don't do a lot of Klm's a year with your cars that a long trip in high temps will bring out problems you've never had before!
$10 in change, trolleys, parking etc, couple of pens and notebooks for work purposes. Car manual. Window shade. Cloth and window cleaner.

Lol, nothing seedy at all, apart from the map of Bundaberg I guess - the towel is handy for wrapping stuff up, the hand wipes are handy for wiping my hands, for example if I'm about to pull into KFC, the tissues are handy for...well...blowing my nose, the strap is handy for carrying stuff that needs to be tied down, and the map of Bundaberg is handy for...well...finding places.![]()
