Default Keating pissed off at Hawke and Blanche

The new biography written about Bob Hawke by his wife, Blanche D'Alpuget, has pissed Paul Keating off big time. She has made numerous claims about his intellect, capacity to govern, etc.

He has responded by saying that the friendship between them over past years was obviously bullshit and has sounded off, as only Keating can, and claimed that he carried Hawke for years when he (Hawke) was the PM.

This one might get interesting. Keating was an egomaniacal, arrogant person who made plenty of enemies in his time as PM, and doesn't seem to care what people think of him now.

Might grab the popcorn and papers and watch this unfold. Love a good public bun fight.

Apparently, a letter Keating wrote appeared in yesterday's Australian. Have to check out their archives.

Gees, I hope he writes that book. Knowing the way he used to pour scorn on anybody and everybody, it would be a rivetting read.

Keating probably wants his five minutes of fame. I was glad to see the end of him when he was in power. I thought he was an embarrassment to our country the way he carried on.

both hawke and keating, like pretty much all other political leaders, have monster egos. they're both trying to rewrite history to make themselves sound better. hawke's interview with blanche d'apulget was a real laugh.

WTF does that even mean? Howard & Costello drove Australia's economy to be one of the strongest in the world. As soon as Labor wins Government, Australia is in MASSIVE debt and completely mis-managed for the next 3 years!

I'm talking about all the backstabbing going on between the then prime minister (Howard) and his trusted off sider (Costello)
btw, Howard sold all of Australia's assets (my bank account would look great if I sold everything I owned too....), personal debt was at an all time high and didn't have a world economic crisis to deal with.
I'm not defending Rudd, but you need to look at the entire picture.

I'm sorry, when was there any back stabbing? There was plenty of media spin but Howard wasn't taken down by Costello, or any puppet masters (ala Labor style).

Sold all of Australia's assets? So who owns the street I live on now? Who do I need to pay to access the public health system? What a stupid comment...

Since you mentioned the GFC, you can thank Howard and Costello directly for preventing Australia from experiencing the worst of the GFC. If Australia wasn't in such a strong position to start with, it would have been really bad. I.e. if Labor had have been in, we would have already had a massive budget deficit (as we do now thanks to Labor) and not been shielded from the impact the rest of the world has felt.

I know what the entire picture looks like... Your version of it is very skewed.

if you believe Costello wasn't shafting Howard, then you probably also believe in the tooth fairy.... surely you aren't that blindfolded.

Yes I acknowledge Howard left the economy in a surplus, which did put us in a better position for the economic crisis. However Howard wasn't dealing with an economic crisis. He was in a far more ideal environment. Smack bang in the middle of a resources boom, sold off Australia's major assets, became Australia's highest taxing government & the nations levels of personal debt was the highest ever under Howard & Costello.

And yes, Rudd has made a lot of stupid economic decisions as well. But if you are going to blame the national debt on him, without considering the very different world economic environment Rudd had to deal with - then you have an entirely skewed, one eyed liberal view.

I'm not loyal to any party, I voted for Howard over Keating and Beazley. However I did vote for Rudd this time because he did have some good policies, and it was inevitable that Costello was eventually going to take over the role as prime-minister if Howard got back in. This coming election, I honestly have no idea who I am going to vote for. I don't like either leader.

I give up... Some people just have no clue. It's sad when the majority of people seem to be so completely ignorant.

Surely you won't base your vote purely on the personalities of the two leaders? That's the sort of mindless thing too many Australians do. It's what the parties represent that is important, not the type of person that the leader is.

Jesus there are some one eyed Liberal supporters here. You're just as bad as the one eye'd Labor supporters. The only difference is you all carry on like your shit doesn't stink (CSP).
Howard and Costello carried on like children. But find me one Politician that doesn't???

The difference with Costello and Howard was, Costello never publicly challenged his power. There was very little complaining from him until well after they had lost the election. Costello, in the public eye, stayed loyal to Howard.

lol, everyone knew what was going on though. And it dragged on for effing ages.
Im glad the labor party did it and got it out of the way. Who care's about "Loyalty" to a PM. So long as the proccess is straight forward. If a CEO changes in a bussiness it doesn't matter.
