I hope this thread doesn't get canned because of what I am about to outline, but I'm sure some of us have felt this way at times.
My mate has a VE Omega which he purchased almost new, about six months ago. It's just a basic Omega but is the newest car he has ever owned, after a succession of old cars over twenty five years of driving. He and his wife are delighted to have such a new, safe and comfortable car for them and their two kids.
On Sunday, he parked at the local RSL and took his wife to dinner and a show there. They returned to find a four wheel drive (he didn't take any notice of what it was, he just said it was huge next to the driver's side of his Omega and he knows nothing about cars.) The 4WD had reversed in next to his car, which he had nosed into the parking spot.
As he approached his car, which is red, he noticed a large dent and a scratch in the top of his driver's door, just behind the mirror. He looked at the 4WD and could see red paint on the bottom of the dog-leg in the rear right hand door, at exactly the right height to match the damage to the Omega. The 4WD was white and the red paint was very noticeable.
He hit the roof (he has a short fuse), looked around and saw nobody. He went to his boot, took out the wheel brace and walked to the rear of the 4WD, and smashed a tail-light with one solid belt.
He then wrote out a letter which he said went something like this.
"Thanks for the ding in my new car you arsehole. Obviously you don't give a stuff about other people's property. I hope your car gets infested with fleas.
PS. You need a new tail-light."
Nobody saw him and nobody has approached him since the incident. He slipped the message under the wiper of the 4WD and drove off very sedately. His wife wanted to kill him, as you can understand, but calmed down after a while. He is still pissed off at the damage to his car and knows there were better ways of addressing the problem, he even had some misgivings at first, but now, he feels that he got the better deal.
You never know. Timestamped photos of the damage to your mates car, and the paint left on the 4wd, would probably be enough for your mates insurance company to chase his. He wouldn't have much of a choice but to pay up in the end.
But really, personal justice is much sweeter. Having him pay excess isn't the same as hopefully making him feel what he inflicted on someone else. I won't endorse either action, the legal couorse, or the satisfactory course.
One does ponder ,
Why didnt he get the rego and make a claim on insurance/call the police ?
If its blatantly obvoious who was to blame , most insurers/police will take the matter seriously .
On the other hand , what if the guy in the 4WD had no clue he'd done it ? Does it really make sense to leave your car right near the damaged one , if you know about it ?
*Dark*
Exactly...I dunno about others, but I'm always careful when opening my door in a car park, purely because I don't want to damage my own car, let alone someone else's. If you hit someone else's car with your door...you're gonna know about it.
Anyway, personally I say good on him, he's got my respect...I just hope there's no CCTV footage of him doing it.
Two wrongs don't make a right and he has lowered himself to the level of the person who hit him, he now has caused damage to a vehicle and walked away. Personally I would have taken photos of both parked cars, making sure I had the rego of the 4WD and also the damage. Then simply handed it over to the Police and my Insurance Company to go after him.
You will recall that I mentioned two things in my first post. He has a very short fuse, which has landed him in strife when he was younger, and he initially had misgivings about what he had done as he drove off. This wasn't fear that he had been seen, rather it was that the 4WD wasn't the car that caused the damage.
He knows that his actions were completely improper and illegal, in fact, he said that even though it was wrong, he would probably act in the same way in the future, because of the acts he had seen go unpunished when he was younger, particularly when some kids smashed his parents' front window of their house for no reason and their parents didn't give a rats arse. The police couldn't act at the time because of the kids' age and lack of proof. They weren't seen doing it, but were heard bragging about it shortly afterwards.
As I said, he had misgivings initially, but is convinced the 4WD was the guilty vehicle and reckons that the cost of a new tail-light was probably the same as the cost of repairs to his Omega.
I have no problems with his actions, sounds like he held back a bit,and i know that can be hard sometimes.
Are we there yet?
Typical friggin bogan! What a knob! It's just a bloody Omega...
The point is the action take was completely inappropriate. It wouldn't have taken much effort to track down the owner who may not even have known what they did. Then you let insurance take care of it.
But what happened was a bit of pointless retaliatory violence followed by still incurring the cost of having to repair it yourself anyway.
Which = STUPID FRIGGIN BOGAN!!!
I understand that, but what has the sort of car it is got to do with it? It doesn't need to be a brand new Ferrari to be someones pride and joy....
Oh that part of my comment was just the un-necessary reaction to something so mediocre to begin with. If it was a Ferrari then I would cry, but an Omega. Please...
So your value of an object to you is what his frustration should be gauged off?
I knew you were contradictory and argumentative, I didn't know you valued your opinion so highly that all others should be looking to you for guidance on the sentimental value of their possessions![]()
*shakes head* It's still HIS property that's been damaged....
See this part of Calabers first post?
"It's just a basic Omega but is the newest car he has ever owned"
In other words, he's forked out good money for a new car. Just because he didn't spend $70,000 on it, doesn't make it any less valueable to HIM!
I didn't say it did. Doesn't mean my opinion of it is the same as his.
