Quick fact - Maggots don't eat live flesh. Just dead and rotting / decomposing flesh.
he was NOT eaten alive. Maggotts are used to treat serious infections and frostbite in modern medicie.

Ah but, there are certain diseases which cause your flesh to decay before your organs fail; most notably, the bubonic plague. Victims smelled like they were already dead for a week before they finally carked it.

that is interesting, considering that maggots eat dead flesh. It's a known fact that when large wounds (gaping wounds) are inflicted, and medical antibacterials are unavailable the wounds are filled with maggots and wrapped up with bandage to eat away the dead cells, and help with healing.
He must have had a serious infection which killed his cells off, the maggots would have just helped the cleaning process..
