Sorry to hear about the vr....
Im not local to you but after my recent bad dealings with car yards i can offer this advise.
Get everything on paper....any thing that need fixing etc.
And bluntly refuse to sign the $$ away until the repairs (if any) are done.
Hope you have more luck than i did

find the car you want. make the sales person aware you HAVE money. then tell them the car is not worth it, needs this and that etc. depending the sales person, if they know you have money they should call you a few hours later (or next day) to ask how you went. start pointin out things, he will repair or knock money off the price to get the sale.

finance money and cash money still both come from blood sweat n tears. when i went to buy the maloo (thru finance) i had the sales man callin me every day, then i had the boss call me.

Play a game and don't act desperate. Keep a serious manner about you, like it is a business transaction rather than stand there saying "I love this car and I want it." Then make an offer which probably will be considered and may or may not be knocked back. Either way (accepted or not) tell the salesperson you are going to look at other cars before you decide and leave your contact details. Generally after 24 hours they are on the phone to you. I offered a fair bit less on a car years ago and waited at home biting my nails for 3 days until the salesman rang me and said it was a slow sales week and he would take my offer.
agree with what has been said i have purchesed 2 Cars from Melbournes cheapest cars and have not had a problem with either of them nore did i feel like the sales people were trying to pressure me in any way, bit of a drive from longford though...
also remember a yard should give you a 24 hour cooling down period to change your mind
also make sure the give you the proper dealer receipt and not bodgys
thanks for all the advice guys.
im feeling a little nervous about this.
i guess ill see how i go.

Good rule of thumb. If they seem dodgey, they are.
