i just did some online insurance quotes and found it cheaper to insure a VS SS 5L v8 than to insure my VS exec 3.8L v6, the excess is equal for both cars and the v8 has cheaper annual payments.
im a 17 year old male P plater so would have thought the v8 would cost alot more than the v6 and im from perth so v8's are legal for p platers.
anyone have any ideas why this is or if it may be a mistake?
(both are the same year with same modifications and security systems etc just one is an SS 5L v8 and one is a v6 exec)
it's not just based on power. it sometimes ends up seeming that way but it's based on risk - statistical risk.
bottom line is more people in your age group have claimed on insurance for the 6cyl model (which makes sense) and that makes it a higher risk to the insurance company.
that's very simplistic. their risk calculations are quite complex and can change often.
when i got a quote on my vy wagon, they originally quoted my for an equipe instead of an executive. when i told them it was an executive,it went up and when i questioned why,i was told that basically, there had been more claims with executive wagons than equipe wagons so they are a higher risk.
seems pretty stupid to me, but at least i understand why now, guess theres a v8 coming my way then.
why stupid? the higher the risk of a claim against a certain car, the higher the cost for people to insure that car. that's just common sense.
yea but the same inexperienced driver would be at a higher chance to crash in a 5L v8 than in a 3.8L v6 due to the power
More claims obviously get made for that type of car, thats why it costs more

There are more claims with a Holden Executive for example over an Equipe or Berlina because the Executive is a more popular model. More people own them and therefore more claims are made. (and no I don't have statistical proof to all you nitwits, it's just common sence).
Not many P platers get around in V8's i'm sure, that's why it is cheaper to insure. It is laughable that it is setup that way, stupid.

Its not really an age thing. My insurance company charged me the exact same amount for a VS ute and a VS SS ute. I'm in my 30s and have a good driving history, no claims etc. I would've thought they'd charge more for an 8 cyl too.
